In the Obama era, I have a recollection of Atlasers talking about "German fundie Lutherans" and "progressive" Scandinavians.

Yes. German-Americans have been quite Republican since WW2 while Scandinavian Americans were historically Democratic, although Republicans have probably improved with Scandinavian Americans recently

Emphasis on still.

It isn't really accurate to say Scandinavians were historically Democratic. They were aligned with Yankee Republicans, and were often progressive Republicans.  The GOP was the party of white Protestants outside the South.

German areas tending to be more Republican did show up a bit in the Klobuchar's last Senate race.

but mostly in the Trump/post-Trump Era, divides over things like class/education & rural v urban are more important.
