Be moderate policy wise, but don’t be a pushover rhetorically. Also take a strong pro civil rights stance. It’s worth the gains in the north.
Oh one last thing, be tough on communism and do NOT try to win the Mountain States or the “swing states” in the beginning, just lock California and the Midwest as much as possible. Your job is maintaining support, not expanding.
