Quote
—Canada wants to force YouTube, TikTok and other video- and audio-sharing sites to prominently feature more of the country’s artists, a move that digital-law experts and former government officials call one of the most aggressive internet regulations yet from a Western country.

Trudeau's playing the long game, he's going to kill TikTok in Canada by making it show nothing but clips from Schitt's Creek.

They may "want" that, but how are they going to actually enable it?

They can require the national subsidiaries to adhere to national laws within their nations.

Enforcing arbitrary laws has never been a problem for the Australian government. Streaming services will probably get the quota watered down in consultation then they’ll just churn out the cheapest reality tv crap in Australia to satisfy it.

Edit: it’s important to understand that while the Aus Gov wraps in up in “culture” this is really just an economic policy. Protectionist quotas to protect the domestic tv and film industry. Jobs and Growth and Jobs and Growth.

It’s not pathetic when it’s literally your job. It’s fighting for economic interests. It’s funny, when coal miners protests to keep their job, it’s super #populist and blue collar but when entertainers do it…it’s suddenly wrong?

Yes, especially since just diversifying to other social media platforms is way, way, way easier than learning some new and entirely unrelated trade when you're in or past middle age, which is what tends to be expected of "old economy" people.

It’s more like forcibly shutting down a bunch of businesses that took years to start up and faced ridiculous competition and then saying “lol just go to a different state ur not allowed here anymore” for no valid reason. Especially when the other states already have a well established and saturated market for your product and a completely different base. You make the same mistake that everyone makes when they say “oh it’s so easy and not a big deal.” You’re right individually making a video isn’t hard. It’s easy and anyone can do it. It’s the entire process of learning how to adapt to a market, what the market wants, and of course taking the time (because unless you are lucky it will take time to build up) and risk that all of that time that could be spent doing something else will be for nothing.

It really is basically type of virtual small business, and you are killing it entirely for…what reason exactly? Because you don’t like tiktok or because there is the possibility that there is the possibility a CCP official will get to learn that ten year olds in America are listening to WAP (or some other days they literally could just buy from Zuckerberg, who would happily sell as you know)

Since it’s so easy, I want everyone else on here to go do it. No seriously, I said “it’s so easy even I could do it”, and then I realized that was stupid and either I had to put up or shut up, so I put up. I dare the rest of “anti-influencers” to do it yourself. “That’s a waste of time” you say?

Exactly time is an input just like labor. And you aren’t willing to do it.

Canada forcing these platforms to prioritize Canadian creators will actually help more of us go viral.  Not a bad thing, really.  Our TV and radio stations have similar content regulations in place - a certain amount of shows and songs played have to be Canadian.  It helps local talent thrive.

It’s funny though. At least right wingers have valid political reasons to ban the app. The self proclaimed leftists who are into banning tiktok really are either blindsided by their own preconceived bias (likely caused by the “everything mainstream society likes is bad” syndrome) are genuinely gullible, or have a bunch of stock in Meta (aka why the democrats in congress are for this, well actually Silicon Valley donors but the point stands)

Don’t really care about whether TikTok is banned or not since short-form video’s already infected every other social media platform, but FL’s right im that it’d be hard for TikTok creators to build up followings on new platforms and it’d be a big problem for people who use it as a major of their job if it were banned.

Also feel like it’s being underrated how much a ban might take people by surprise - I haven’t heard that much about it outside of political spaces. A ban is definitely going hit a lot of people out of nowhere.

Okay yes, this is a reasonable point against cracking down on it from my political perspective—it wouldn't be likely to achieve the effects I would want to see anyway, especially since it's not like other platforms have that much less of a disinformation problem.

Wikipedia exists, and is much more accurate than TikTok. Also, ideally the public school system would be flooded with money to New Jersey levels at a minimum.

Tiktok firstly actually exposes those who don’t normally think about these topics to the content meaning you actually spark education. And the fast nature of short form videos and scrolling means someone using tiktok is likely to hit at least one of those educational/informational videos. Anyways, funding alone won’t solve the community level problems if allocated improperly. I do support increased funding but it isn’t as simple as “pump more money into school coffers”

It’s funny. Short term videos are literally just a combination of memes and long term videos. Yet you see none of the millennial avocado clutchers or any of the “pick me” intellectuals on here ever get upset about either of the other two because they grew up with them in their teen/college years and whatever they grew up with is okay.

This is genuinely the same s**t the formerly liberal boomers fell into and I can’t believe y’all are this stupid to fall for it. It’s like watching a motherf**king train wreck when I see y’all slowly become Fuzzy.
