I wrote a little post a couple years ago about my experiences reading the Bible. Even if I leave aside entirely any discussion of its religious importance, it's the best and most important representation of our shared cultural heritage. Its influence permeates the way that we write, even.

The continuous narrative starting from Genesis and running through 2 Kings is unlike anything else in the history of human creative endeavor. You need only look at how many contemporary works of fiction are pale imitations. Everyone here could do with more biblical literacy, especially the people who think they don't need it.
