The book itself is good; the problem is that throughout history people have interpreted various sections of it to justify illegal and/or unethical actions.

It's not particularly hard to "interpret various sections of it to justify illegal and/or unethical actions" when God is often the one outright commanding those actions, including numerous genocides, war slavery, extremely outdated gender and social roles and so forth
