Herschel Walker is not the only right wing athlete who can be successful in the 21st century....

What about Alexi Lalas, right wing former U.S. soccer player, known for his anti-Black Lives Matter rants, or John Tortorella, perennial hockey coach who has also made anti-Black Lives Matter comments in the past?

I know Republicans have been pushing for Goose Gossage, Tony La Russa, George Brett, Steve Young, John Elway and Curt Schilling to run for office numerous times but they did not seem interested.

Do you see any potential here?

You don't think Herschel started a trend?

Why would he be the start of a trend?

He is about to lose and it's unlikely he will return.

Lynn Swann was the party’s gubernatorial nominee in PA in 2006, but he ended up losing in a landslide (he made even Doug Mastriano’s pathetic performance look good).

Only because Dems ran Ed Rendell, a proud Most Informed and Most Obnoxious lifer who participated in the infamous booing of Santa Claus.

Does the name Jack Kemp ring a bell?

Yes, I remember Kemp. He would have been a great vice president or president.

I am surprised no one mentioned John Rocker.

He's actually well-spoken and would have given Warnock a run, he is a Georgia native.

Former baseball player & 2x World Series champ Aubrey Huff ran for Solana Beach school board this year. He's also known for his anti-mask stances and support of Trump.

He lost 80% - 20%

2006 was good for Democrats' overall, but especially so in the gubernatorial races...no Democratic governor even came particularly close to losing.

North Florida had a black former NFL player run as a Republican in the state senate seat covering Leon County. It formerly was a pretty Safe D district as Leon and Gadsden would carry it at the presidential margin while still lagging downballot trends for rurals such as Liberty would make it very Democratic. As recent as 2016 the seat voted like Clinton +8 but the Dem state senator won by 40 albeit against a random nobody.

However, in 2020 the seat was open, Democrats recruited Loranne Ausley who seemed to have been from some political dynasty in the region while Rs recruited some black retired police officer. The seat voted Biden +9 congressionally but due to some fairly decent black crossover support the R only lost the seat by 6 while doing relatively poorly with ancestral Democratic rurals.

After redistricting, the new seat became Biden +3 because it had to expand and take more rurals . It obviously flipped this year.

I don't think there is enough reason to believe Alexi Lalas is right wing.  He had made a tweet that some thought was anti-BLM, but he later apologized for it.

You can start with Gerald Ford, who hit his Republican primary opponent, an incumbent, from the Right.

Jim Bunning.
Steve Largent.
Lynn Swann.
