Yikes. I suppose I underestimated the sheer size of their staff though since it's just 5%...but this really sucks.

I thought they were doing fine? I think layoffs should always be a last resort, and before perhaps you cut the salaries of executives that make a ton of money.

Microsoft expanded it's workforce by 40k over the last 2 years, this is probably them trying to scale back from that.

Biden actually told coal miners to learn to code. How many of those who say "learn to code" can code themselves?

There are still massive shortages of cybersecurity experts for example. Modern web development though is a mess.

But the real cause of these layoffs is not labour oversupply, it's that the entire tech industry is high on cheap credit and now that interest rates are being raised, it's the end of the party

The coronavirus was probably the peak where everyone had to use their services and tech gear, they had already achieved 100% market dominance which they will never reach again.

But now everyone is bored of them, they no longer seem as exiting as they used to be, and people want to get out more after long periods of lockdows.

In one word:

Tech is out of fashion.

A lot of this is just a reversion to the mean. Most of these big tech companies went on hiring sprees during the pandemic and now are having to adapt to life returning to normal. I think Amazon's employee count went from 780k to 1.6 million in 2 years, for example.

I do not discourage learning to code. It is great exercise for my the mind. I have done it my self for mental exercise.

Wouldn't recommend it for careers though right now.

At Twitter, the diversity, equity and inclusion team is down to just two people from 30, one former employee said. A DEI worker who was let go from a popular ride-share company said their job search has stalled as other technology companies assess their finances. And just before getting the axe at separate tech giants this fall, two DEI specialists said leadership had stopped setting long-term goals for their departments entirely.

The layoffs sweeping the technology industry are gutting diversity and inclusion departments, threatening company pledges to boost underrepresented groups in their ranks and leadership.

Listings for DEI roles were down 19% last year — a bigger decline than legal or general human resources jobs saw, according to findings from Textio, which helps companies create unbiased job ads. Only software engineering and data science jobs saw larger declines, at 24% and 27%, respectively.

Wonderful news !

There was a massive shortage of engineers only a few months ago. I know not all these high tech workers are engineers, but have there been follow up reports on whether these laid off high tech workers are easily finding jobs at other companies? If that is the case, a rotation of high tech workers to other companies certainly isn't a bad thing.

If that is the case, a rotation of high tech workers to other companies certainly isn't a bad thing.

Anecdotally, my company laid off 15% of its workforce last June, and then since then another 15% have quit. The layoffs were disproportionately outside of the engineering teams (e.g. HR, marketing, finance, customer service, business development, IT, legal, etc.) but basically everyone found jobs elsewhere pretty quickly, whether in other tech companies or in the non-tech sector. The quitters were spread more evenly across the company, but also found new jobs with little issue.

If engineers are getting laid off, they almost certainly will be snatched up quickly by other companies, tech or not. People working in other departments will also likely find jobs quickly, just not as quickly. This is why I'm not too worried about the tech layoffs; it's more a symptom of overexpansion, and on top of that, the tech sector represents a much smaller portion of the workforce than it does economic activity (not to downplay how much getting laid off sucks and how moronic so many tech leaders are). When layoffs start hitting the traditional economy, then i'll be more worried.

Right now, there just seems to be a lot of churn in the labor market worldwide. Combined with demographic trends, I don't see this shortage letting up soon, even if a minor recession occurs.
