How dumb do you have to be to not understand that nonrenewal of an employment contract is just as much an adverse employment action as a firing?

Using technicalities to dismiss workers without labor protections to…own the cons?

She's suing them.

FWIW the fact that even he's not defending the university here*, considering his record of knee-jerk contrarianism in defending any idiotic thing done by someone who isn't right-wing is kind of telling.

*Or even pulled one of his typical "I'm not saying I support this but if instead what happened was *thing that almost certainly no one here would defend* you would all support it" type lines.

So two developments, first is that the school is asking the lawsuit against them to be dismissed which I highly doubt will happen. Likely they'll settle once that fails: https://kstp.com/kstp-news/local-news/hamline-university-asks-judge-to-dismiss-ex-instructors-lawsuit/

But perhaps more interestingly, they seem to actually be backing down from their original actions: https://www.twincities.com/2023/01/17/adjunct-professor-sues-hamline-university-over-dismissal-amid-islamophobia-controversy/

Quote
“In a joint statement Tuesday, President Miller and Board of Trustees Chairwoman Ellen Watters said the criticism of Hamline has “caused us to review and re-examine our actions.

“Hamline is a multi-cultural, multi-religious community that has been a leader in creating space for civil conversations. Like all organizations, sometimes we misstep,” the statement continued. “In the interest of hearing from and supporting our Muslim students, language was used that does not reflect our sentiments on academic freedom. Based on all that we have learned, we have determined that our usage of the term ‘Islamophobic’ was therefore flawed. We strongly support academic freedom for all members of the Hamline community.”

Hamline also announced it will host “two major conversations” in the coming months concerning academic freedom, religion and student care.”

So yeah they realized they stepped in it big time and are now doing damage control, this is after all a huge blow to their reputation and may have scared off potential new students. Glad to see actual consequences here, this is the sort of thing that there needs to be consequences for to stop this sort of nonsense from spreading.

(I think this also shows that they understand how low their chances of having the case dismissed are.)

I wonder if fear of terrorism played any part in their decisions. Times seemed to have changed a bit, but even just a few years ago a well-publicized "controversy" about Mohammed images could result in a bombing or shooting at the place in question.

I doubt it. This wouldn't have even been news had the professor not been dismissed.

This is just a great example of what DEI-brain does to college administrations and why it needs to be rolled back. Thankfully, that does seem to be happening as a result from this.

I agree that's certainly the case. I was just making an observation about how academic and media fears of displaying images of Mohammed have changed over recent decades.
