When Pelosi voted in the first round it was:
151 McCarthy (R)
146 Jeffries (D)
15 Other (R)

In the second round:
151 McCarthy (R)
144 Jeffries (D)
15 Jordan (R)

The anti-McCarthy votes have not budged so far...

So we're about to end up with the same number of more defections in round 2 than 1? McCarthy is finished.

Self for Jordan. None of the 19 Republicans that voted against McCarthy in the first vote changed their vote in favor of him in the second vote.

I honestly feel bad for McCarthy, let's make him speaker for 1 day just to give him the title before revoking it.

We're still discussing the "Fair" Tax? Jesus

That's literally part of the Freedom caucus demand

In other news, the bevy of newbie Pubs in NJ, NY and CA are demanding a repeal of the SALT cap. It should be utter chaos.

So it's fair to say that's it for him? He might convince two or three in the end, but not all but four. No way. McCarthy's political career might be over at this point.

I thought she was more of a moderate because it's Crist's old district, which isn't that Republican.

Luna is a huge surprise to me, at this rate I could see her going down hard in 2024

Scott Perry's district is more competitive than hers, actually. The FLGOP turned FL13 from a Biden+4 district into a Trump+6 seat.

You know. I think the danger of the Republican Party is overhyped.

They can't even elect a speaker.

Potentially stupid question: Couldn't Democrats change the rules in the previous congress that the speaker can be elected by a plurality? The Freedom Caucus clowns would then indirectly elect Jeffries.

If we win the presidency , our house majority is likely higher and then we have a leader who can use the bully pulpit to force these people in line .

Less cowards, more thinking they have better things to do today.

There is nothing possibly more good they could be doing than watching the GOP self-destruct right now. Those voting present to "avoid the drama" or whatever need to be punished.

That happened in 2016 and look what happened then.

I think if he can't somehow win the speakership, he'll have to quit conference leadership entirely. He's too much damaged goods now.

Nope, don't think so, since it's the 118th Congress now and the GOP has a majority. I could be wrong though, and if you're right, then they should absolutely do as you said.

Yeah, pouring more gasoline on the GOP dumpster fire is the best possible thing they have to do.

Btw they apparently were planning to do this to Ryan in 2017 but didn't .
