New Election: 1996 Virginia Referendum General Election Results

Question 5: "Shall the Constitution of Virginia be amended to remove the language which prohibits the General Assembly from passing a law permitting incorporation of any church or religious organization?"

I think I'm supposed to cheer for No here.

And here's the map for the "Right to Hunt" amendment

https://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/state.php?year=2000&off=51&elect=0&fips=51&f=0

That passed 60/40.

And it's remarkably similar to this map

Which was the Gay Marriage Amendment

https://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/state.php?year=2006&off=50&elect=0&fips=51&f=0

Gay Marriages for all, hunting for none. Cheesy

WTH is that supposed to mean? It's obviously an Establishment Clause thing, but I can't make heads or tails of it.

They actually amended the constitution to allow for the "Right to Hunt"?  Why?

I also can't understand the first one at all.  Based on the voting returns, neither could the people of Virginia...

checking Lexis-Nexis says that this amendment was supposed to protect churches from lawsuits or something, but that the amendment wasn't publicized and the churches didn't really support it either.

Interesting how Charlottesville, Arlington, and Alexandria cities voted against the amendment with over 70%.

Does anyone know of any other counties/cities anywhere than have defeated gay marriage bans by 70% or anywhere close?

Ah, okay. Then I would cheer for "No", too.

Probably some state politician's pet issue. Maybe the Republicans in Virginia tried to use it as a wedge against the Democrats, too. I probably would have voted against the amendment despite my earlier statement that hunting is fine; frivolous amendments are not fine.

Virginia Beach votes No, while Fairfax votes Yes?

Well, it was ten years ago.
Apart from those, it shows the areas of Republicanism (rather than Conservatism) in the state quite well, actually.

I disagree. It looks more to me like the people of Virginia just had no clue what the amendment meant or what its ramifications were.

Those yes counties west of Hampton Roads are more than a little surprising to me as well. And there's a rural-smaller cities split additional dimension to the map.
Apart from that, there's traditional Republicanism in the Shenandoah Valley and in those two old Unconditional Unionist counties voting yes towards the southwest, and the heavily white parts of coastal Virginia.

Loudoun most likely voted against The Right To Hunt admendment since most of the people who live in Eastern Loudoun are from urbanized parts of the Northeast.

This was 1996, before Loudoun's demographic shift. Loudoun was heavily conservative Republican at this point.

Anyhow, as far as gay marriage goes, the only 'no' vote I can find close to 70% is Dane, Wisconsin (Madison) where 67% voted 'no'.

I find it hard to believe that Charlottesville, Arlington, or Alexandria, VA are more liberal than Madison, Wisconsin. On the other hand, perhaps the rural areas of Dane, WI voted for the ban. I can't find city results for the Wisconsin ban.

That's my mistake, I thought it said 2006.
