In 2004, Kerry defeated Bush by winning every state he won in 2004 plus Ohio. As a result, Bush won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote ironically and therefore conceded the 2004 race to President Elect Kerry.

In 2008, Bush decided to announce he would run for a third time and seek a second non consecutive term for the presidency. He goes on to win the GOP nominstion, defeating Mike Huckabee and John McCain in the primary.

It’s worth noting 2006 was a red wave and the 2008 crash still happens.
