America apparently wasn’t ready for a Catholic president in 1928, but elected one in 1960 (barely).

How far back in history could a Jew have been elected President?

Eh, if Al Smith was the Democratic nominee in 1932, he would have won easily. Even in 1928 Al Smith did much better in Northern urban areas than the previous two Democratic nominees did.

Funny enough, Hoover thought appointing a New York Jewish Democrat to the Supreme Court in 1932 could help him get re-elected.

1996 maybe? Arlen Specter sought the nomination. I don't think he would have won due to the national environment and Clinton's strengths, but I don't think that he would have lose due to him being Jewish.

Waaaaay too early. If Kennedy being a Catholic was somewhat of an issue in 1960, there's zero chance a Jew is getting elected in 1940.

After the Holocaust antisemitism fell out of favor with most people, so probably in the 1950's.

I agree, though probably not against a charismatic and moderate candidate like Wendell Willkie. Lehman would have defeated someone like Robert Taft or Herbert Hoover.
