Very ironically glorifies slavers while pretending to create an anti-slavery film.

I have a feeling most critics were literally afraid to give it a negative review.

There is nothing that sets this film apart in quality from any number of Braveheart knock-offs released over the past quarter of a century, even if you set aside historical accuracy. Yet the reviews were way more positive than most similar films got. Impossible not to think the fact that the film depicts African women as mighty warriors didn't influence critics' judgment, for fear of the backlash they would get if they were honest about both the film and the history it pretends to depict.

It's not even a bad film BTW, but it's far from great either, massively overrated. It is neither better nor more historically accurate than, say, 300, yet that one got blasted by critics as derivative and over-the-top and ahistorical and even racist. It's all quite ironic.
