For what it's worth, I believe Eisenhower was going to run as a Democrat if it looked like MacCarthur would get the Republican nomination.

That says way more about MacArthur than about Eisenhower.

Contemporary sources thought that Eisenhower was going to run for the Presidency even years before, and that he only choose the Republican party because of 2 things:

1. Truman was increadibly unpopular after sacking MacArthur, so the Democrats had no hope.
2. To stop MacArthur who was gearing for the Republican nomination.
