Staten Island of NYC and suburban Long Island is not super reactionary as you think........they're not Mountain Brook or Waukesha....super reactionary law and order Republican urban/suburban areas.....

Staten Island voted for Clinton, Gore, Obama in 2012.
Long Island, especially Nassau has voted Democrat for president since 1992......
Suffolk voted Democrat from 1996 to 2012........

They are swingy counties at best, once Republican in the mid-20th century until the 1992 realignment.....can go either way but are ancestrally Republican......at the local level....

They're like Tilt R/Tossup level.....

There's a "Trump effect" in the region.  Italians, Russians and Orthodox Jews in the NY area like him.

Yes, it is a Trump effect.

Cruz, DeSantis and others probably will not duplicate that. I can see someone like Cruz losing SI and LI badly......the cops may stay home

I’ve written at length elsewhere how Trump’s firsthand experience with racially segregated construction unions served a crucible for his national platform, however Tony’s interaction with a group of squatters while driving his son around Newark breaks it down much more succinctly:

True. For some reason, Dole and Bush could not appeal to these people in 1996 and 2000. How Gore carried SI is truly amazing.....it flipped to Bush in 2004 because of 9/11 obviously.....
