I support averting the rail way strike.

One of Bidens best acts as president !

But I do agree with the unions that people deserve sick pay.

Republicans oppose sick pay for workers and expect people to go to work when they are sick.

what I find bit surprising is why are these railroad companies hesitating to grant 4 paid sick leaves when they already agreed for 24% pay raise ? Are 4 paid sick leaves much more costly than the pay raise for these companies ?

Because capitalism and because they know the elites will bail them out (see: Biden tweet) and deal a crippling blow to Unions.

Apparently, from what I read, the Unions forwent sick leave in the past for drastic pay raises.

The unions were gracious enough to give us time for the midterms.
While Biden can’t really force the company to offer better terms, I do wonder whether he really is using maximum public pressure.

Disappointing from Biden, I guess we’ll just have to see if this ends up actually happening. Hopefully there isn’t support in Congress to force a bad deal.

When the stake is the the global economy and many ppls livelihoods, it’s not disappointing.

If it’s really that vital the rail companies can cut a better deal.

There's a lot they can do short of this - but if it's really so important and they're not prepared to let market-based negotiations decide things, the federal government can always buy the company.

It's a national security issue and this is the only option, but yes, Biden should be leaning on the rail companies to offer a better deal as well.

Seems like even the GOP is moving away from the Reagan/Thatcher consensus  on unions

Atlas realignment moment.

I do wonder whether Republicans are cynically doing this in the hopes of a strike and making inflation worse…but I hope I am wrong.

Republicans will side with anyone they have to in order to hurt Democrats and ensure a disaster happens on their watch. It's all cynicism. If this potential strike was happening under Trump, these same Republicans would be calling for the return of the Pinkertons.

It would be a bit more complicated than that.  House and Senate Republican leaders would both want to respond like Reagan did to the air traffic controllers, but then Trump would suddenly tweet out in the middle of the morning that he will be vetoing any deal that doesn't have a week of paid sick leave "for our great patriotic railroaders."  I think Trump would narrowly win this and flip just enough Republican votes.

How does calling for sick leave hurt Democrats? I’m assuming it ultimately won’t pass and they want unions to be mad at democrats for forcing a deal without sick leave?
