Who do you think will be the first African American woman to become governor of a US state? And when do you think that happens?

As for 2024, I think Lisa Blunt Rochester would be most likely. Carney will be term-limited and she's well known around Delaware as sole Representative.

In 2025, Winsome Sears would be a good bet for Virginia, especially if Biden is still president.

In 2026, I think there's a good chance JB Pritzker retires. Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton would be a frontrunner. Seems like she's relatively close with Pritzker, whose support would almost seal the deal? I'd also not rule out Secretary of State Shirley Weber or London Breed for California that year. In Connecticut, Rep. Jahana Hayes would also be a top-tier contender.

Stratton of IL whenever Pritzker hangs it up and it might be 2026

Lisa Madigan had a chance but retired instead of running indefinitely for AG

Miyares seems like a much better candidate to replace Youngkin than Sears. Sears would be pretty easy to paint as a crackpot (a la Bishop Jackson). Jennifer Carroll Foy would have better odds of being elected in 2025 even with a Democratic president.

I wonder how Ayanna Pressley would do in a D primary as Maura Healey's eventual successor.  Could be her.

There's a good chance that it's the current Lt. Gov of NJ, Sheila Oliver.

I think Sherrill is the frontrunner for that seat.

I think most people expect Pressley to run for Senate, not Governor.

If Shirley Weber runs California like she ran our elections, the state is completely f@cked.

Shelia Oliver in 2025 when Murphy is Term limited. She would be a frontrunner

Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware in 2024

Or  Lieutenant Governor  Julianna Stratton of Illinois when Pritzker retires in 2026.

Sadly she won't be in the running, reportedly she has died.

FWIW, it's seen as likely that Murphy will pick a black woman as his new LG: https://newjerseyglobe.com/governor/murphy-will-name-new-lieutenant-governor-with-short-list-quickly-emerging/

It doesn’t seem likely this person will be a serious contender for Governor (barring Murphy’s death) nor would Oliver have been (may she rest in peace). Fulop is quickly clearing the field of anyone but hopeless cases or mega-fundraisers like Gottheimer and Sherrill (or a mystery billionaire).

She's a bit too old for it to happen and not be the first.

As of now, the most likely imo is Virginia Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears. Sears can run on the Youngkin Administration's extremely high approval ratings in Virginia. She would also have a decent chance of winning, especially if Biden is re-elected in 2024.

I don’t think it’s going to be her. Sears isn’t as popular as Youngkin and IMO would lose. She also won’t be facing a candidate nearly as bad as McAuliffe in all likelihood.

You bring a good point, considering the fact that Abigail Spanberger (a popular Democratic representative, and someone who has the ability to win Biden-Youngkin voters) is running for governor.

But as of now I think she's the most likely. Of course there could be other options in other states that could emerge between now and then....

Agreed, Sears has a decent shot, especially during a 2nd Biden term. Obama was also at the bottom of his approval ratings a year after winning reelection and TMac only won with 47% and the Libertarian taking more than 6% of the vote.

That said, popularity of a term-limited gov or prez isn't always transfered to the candidate of their party, so the seat could still flip back. If not 2025, I feel like 2026 is most likely going to be the year. Stratton seems well positioned to replace Pritzker. While IL doesn't have term limits, I believe he'll retire after the 2nd term.

Yeah I agree with you on this one. Imo Spanberger wins the gubernatorial race in 2025. She's basically the best candidate the Democrats could have recruited, and Virginia has a Dem lean to begin with.

I think Stratton in Illinois will be the first black female governor in the US. I think Pritzker does retire in 2026 and Stratton succeeds him then.
