Charles loved his Granny, the Queen Mum more than he liked Philip, Andrew, Edward and even his own sons.
A long tradition for male British aristos.
O/c it should be 'The Queen Mother... and also Lord Mountbatten' there. The extent to which he shares his uncle/surrogate father figure's views is quite telling.
What exactly were THE LAST VICEROY's views, other than not wanting to be a military dictator?
He also, rather ironically, was supportive of a united Ireland.
As for the story at hand, yeah it's basically a fight he didn't want to waste his energy and political capital on. Wouldn't say he hates Edward (Andrew, who was the Queen's favourite, was always the one he had more issues with, especially recently) but they are not particularly close either - after all there is almost 16 years between them. Probably decided in the end to follow his mothers wishes - she was fond of Edward who caused her the least trouble of the four and she was very close to his wife Sophie (undoubtedly her favourite of her children's spouses), but reportedly if it was up to Charles he'd be keeping this title free for Charlotte.
