In June 1999, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh made a deal with Prince Edward that when his parents dies, Edward will be Duke of Edinburgh....

23 years later, King Charles III does not want his brother to get the title.

Philip is Charles' eldest son and Charles was Duke of Edinburgh last year.....he remains so....he was first in line to the dukedom.

William is Earl of Merioneth, the subsidiary title.

George is Baron Greenwich.

Edward will never be Duke.

Charles is not the Duke of Edinburgh. There is no Duke of Edinburgh. When Charles became King the Dukedom merged in the Crown and became vacant (or available so to speak).
That is why Charles could make Edward the Duke of Edinburgh.

For the news itself, it is not suprising. It is well known that Charles does not really like Andrew and Edward. There is a lot of resentment on his part.

It was also claimed that Charles wouldn't take the regnal name Charles III, but he did. So, take this story with a pinch of Maldon Crystal Salt, official providers of sea salt to the late Queen.

See what happens at the Coronation; creating William as Prince of Wales happened surprisingly fast, but he might want to wait a bit for other stuff.

There are two sorts of "palace sources suggest..." stories:

  • Those printed in the Mirror, Mail and Express, which should be treated with significant skepticism.
  • Those hidden in the back-pages of Private Eye, which generally turn out to be accurate.

He only likes his younger sister, Anne, and is quite intimidated by her. He grew up with Anne. He never grew up with Andrew and Edward like he did with Anne.

Charles loved his Granny, the Queen Mum more than he liked Philip, Andrew, Edward and even his own sons.

Here is my offering to the gossip pile. Yawn.

https://www.thelist.com/745670/the-truth-about-prince-charles-relationship-with-prince-andrew/

Yes, I find the Windsors to be an incredibly boring (superficial) and not very bright lot, and while I enjoy the costumes for about 15 minutes during televised pomp and ceremony, I then switch the channel.

Not sure why Edward deserves this slight. He seems like a good guy. This might be the first thing Charles has done as king that I’ve disagreed with.

Oh that and Anne not getting that navy post. Throw your brother and sister a bone man!

A long tradition for male British aristos.

"Flunky" certainly got the closing days of Brenda's reign pretty much spot on.

O/c it should be 'The Queen Mother... and also Lord Mountbatten' there. The extent to which he shares his uncle/surrogate father figure's views is quite telling.

His column that her health was worse than what the Palace was letting on was published on the day of her death.

What exactly were THE LAST VICEROY's views, other than not wanting to be a military dictator?

Mildly left of centre in a very paternalistic and somewhat authoritarian kind of way, interested in technocratic solutions to difficult problems, pro-environment before that was fashionable.* Had he not been murdered there's little doubt that he would have looked favourably on the SDP.

*Quite a similar package, overall, to those of that other mid-century Modernist titan Lord Reith, which is amusing as Mountbatten was on Reith's constantly updated Enemies List.

Itís worth recalling the fracas after Edwards production company (where he was MD) broke an agreement not to film Prince William at university- rather hilarious on reflection but Brian made his feelings clear.

An added twist is that Edward and his wife were very close to the Queen in her later years- especially Sophie. This adds a reason for Brian not to like them as relations between both courts didnít exactly go smoothlyÖ

Elizabeth and Philip had two children in quick succession, then several years went by and they had two more children in quick succession. Not surprising that they basically function as separate sets of siblings. Especially since Charles had been shipped off to boarding school by the time the younger two were born - how often did he even see them when they were growing up? Almost more of a cousin-level relationship than a sibling one.

Actually, the monarch can't be a Duke.

There's a fair amount of classism in the article too, although I'm not sure whether it would seem classist in the UK or not. It describes people who liked and admired QE2--in other words, a strong majority of the British public and for that matter at least a plurality of the public in most of the world's countries--in the same terms similar publications use for "deplorables".
