Favourite *ever* as opposed to just now?

If so, then maybe Tage Erlander.

Joe Biden obviously. If he doesn't count, I'd say Emmanuel Macron.

I'm surprised about Macron. As a social democrat, don't you think he's too harsh with poor people?

Somewhat maybe, though I really like his very strongly pro-EU stances. And some of the harsh reforms like a higher retirement age are overall necessary to long term secure the social safety net.

I might prefer Sanna Marin or Jacinda Ardern on some issues as opposed to Macron, though latter has overall a bigger impact on policies that affect me.

Bob was a classic character. He and Blanche are Australian icons. A bit like Ronald Reagan in a way minus the politics.

If it’s all time, maybe José Batlle y Ordóñez. Currently…Sanna Marin might be a good choice.

In the post-WWII era, the one that leaps to mind is Gorbachev.

I distinguish politician from leader. My favorite leaders would be Gandhi and Mandela.

Clement Attlee is also a classic. Some others:

Alicia Moreau de Justo (early Argentinian socialist feminist)
Jaime Roldós (Ecuadorian president and staunch defender of human rights in the 70s and 80s)
Manuel Azaña (Spanish republican leader)
Manuel Mora (Costa Rican communist/labor leader influential in establishing their welfare state - might have put Figueres but for his anticommunism and his 70s term)
Wilson Ferreira (Uruguayan dissident who likely had an election stolen from him, would have been the only good blanco president)
Tommy Douglas
Emiliano Zapata
the Flores Magón brothers (Mexican revolutionary anarchists) if they count.
BR Ambedkar (Father of the Indian Constitution and Dalit activist)

What’s not to love? Unified and secularized his country, established a massive welfare state, killed a right-wing newspaper editor in a duel and *then* legalized dueling, etc.

What, you don't like when people get KGB funding and CIA funding at once despite having a history of both banning the communist party and arming Cuban revolutionaries? For shame.

As for my answer, can I cheat and pretend Giuseppe Garibaldi was French in an extremely 3D chess move of Italian patriotism? Although the biggest troll move would be to call him Uruguayan (there's a reason he is known as the hero of two worlds!), which also ties nicely with Alfred's and CumbrianLefty's takes.

Jacinda Ardern. She's awesome in more ways than one.
