"America is a nation of people above all else. The powerful wish to clamp down on American ideals. The Socialist Party of America has stood against these for over 100 years. We have been through thick and thin. Let us look back and see the history of our party and how we made America the land of the free."

- Representative Amelia Howard(S-GA) at the 2020 SNC.

The Socialist Party of America is a socialist political party. Founded by Eugene Debs in 1898, the party has been a major party since the election of 1912. Once a minor political party, it has since become one the worlds largest parties.

Assassination of William McKinley

On September, 6th, 1901 an unknown assassin shot William McKinley. McKinley was fatally shot and Died on October, 3rd, 1901. They caught a suspect, Leon Czolgosz, but due to having a fairly solid alibi, he was let go. Leon died an old man on November, 11th, 1962. Charles Fairbanks therefore became president.

The Fairbanks presidency

Fairbanks governed as a conservative. Upon the death of Horace Gray he appointed Henry E. Burnham to the court. To replace him in the Senate, Cyrus A. Sulloway was appointed. When George Shiras Jr. retired, he appointed Chauncey Depew. To replace Depew, Arthur S. Tompkins was elected.

The Overturning of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act:

In 1905, the Supreme Court heard a case between John Rockefeller and the US Government about US Steel being a monopoly. In a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court overturned the Sherman Anti-Trust Act.

Unsurprisingly, this destroyed the Republicans in both 1906 and 1910. The Socialists would even get their first house seats and their first mayors of large towns. This has been considered a huge part in the fall of the Republican Party.

The Kern Anti-Trust Act

In May of 1909, President Bryan made a proposal to congress about a new Anti-Trust Act which he sent via Vice President Kern. It contained many provisions about the old Sherman Anti-Trust Act and was very popular among voters. It even expanded upon these old provisions to make sure it was able to stand the test of time.

As a result, this act passed Congress 312-79 in the House and 79-13 in the Senate

Shouldn't that be May 1909? Bryan was elected in 1908.

Otto T. Bannard(Republican) 32.43%

1912 Campaign:

The 1912 campaign was the first ever campaign where all major parties did an active campaign. The Three Campaigns were wildly different however.

Roosevelt's Campaign:

Roosevelt ran a campaign calling President Bryan a Radical. He also stated plans to sign a Treaty with the United Kingdom. This would have massive ramifications for America.

Bryan's Campaign:

Bryan ran a Campaign stating  that the Republicans were untrustworthy with the Presidency and that you shouldn't change a horse midstream.

Debs Campaign:

Debs ran a Campaign stating that neither Bryan or Roosevelt were the right choice for America and that Socialism was the way through the future.

1912 Downballot Races:

House:
Democratic: 231 Seats
Republican: 183 Seats[1]
Socialist: 12 Seats
LaFollette Republican: 9 Seats[1]

Senate:
Democratic: 49 Seats
Republican: 44 Seats[1]
LaFollette Republican: 3 Seats[1]

[1] After this Election, the Republican Party experienced a very real split between the more Right-Wing "National Republican" and more Left-Wing "LaFollette Republican" groups. While listed separately here and in the 1914 page, the Split would not be formalized until the Election of 1916. This is part of why the Republican Party collapsed after 1930
