We all know the story of the Great Recession and how it basically allowed Obama a skyrocket victory and then under President Obama, we saw polarization before skyrocketing under Trump and now Biden.

In 2004, though, there was a genuine chance for John Kerry to become President if Ohio had gone to him. People may say that a Democrat would govern differently but I'm quite unsure about that. Reason being that in the oughts, the Democrats and Republicans had similar platforms and were mostly just moderates instead of being Liberal/Conservative full bore on most issues.

So, if John Kerry had won in 2004 and a Great Depression 2 happened under him, how do you think political polarization would get? Do you think it would still be as bad as OTL or do you think it'd cool down quite a bit and go back to 50/50 after a period of dominance by the party that takes power in 2008 or do you think Polarization would hit a high relatively quickly?

A Republican winner in 2008- especially McCain- would make the recession that much more severe, possibly even starting another war. By 2012, I could see some kind of alternate Tea Party that first emerged during the Kerry administration throwing a wrench in the works and Bernie Sanders making a serious showing in the primaries if not winning them outright.

I figured Russ Feingold would remain prominent in a Kerry wins 04/loses 08 scenario, since he'd easily win re-election in 2010 under a Republican administration. But I'm not sure how effective he'd be against a President McCain thanks to their legislative history, even if his term is wracked with economic malaise and that refrain of bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran. Perhaps he'd serve as a prominent voice in the Senate keeping McCain to account, and be a shoo-in for 2016 if Hillary blows 2012.

Jeb! or McCain will make things worse with 2012 being another 1912 with a Tea Party split
