I'll also note that Ted Cruz was second in 2016, but he's not even mentioned at all until now.

I’m currently predicting Hawley, but maybe Youngkin also might have a chance

Hawley is one of the few people who might lose to Kamala Harris, so best of luck to the GOP if they go with him.

Even after being mauled by Trump in his first go-around in 2024?  

Traditionally the Republicans have gone with runner ups. Specifically Reagan, Bush Sr., Dole, McCain, and Romney, with Bush Jr. and Trump being the two exceptions.
