Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico declares his candidacy for President of the United States in October 2003. Richardson, a former U.S. Representative, UN delegate, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, and Secretary of Energy, has plenty of experience and is a skilled executive as Governor.

His entry into the race is cheered by the moderate wing of the Democratic Party, and Richardson easily dispatches of such candidates as John Kerry, Howard Dean, and John Edwards in the crucial Iowa Caucus. His big win in Iowa can be partially accredited to his support from popular Governor Tom Vilsack. Many talk of a Richardson-Vilsack Ticket in 2004.

Following a big win in New Hampshire and Mini-Tuesday, Richardson now must select a good running-mate. His campaign has limited the short list to three candidates: Tom Vilsack, Evan Bayh, and Mary Landrieu. On June 11th, 2004, Richardson names Mary Landrieu as his running-mate. The ticket of Richardson-Landrieu is a revolutionary one with the first Mexican-American presidential nominee for a major party and the second woman.

The GOP selects President George W. Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney as their nominees.

Who wins the 2004 Election, Bush-Cheney or Richardson-Landrieu?

Richardson pulls it out in a close race, but it could go either way:

Every state except for New Mexico votes the same way.  Bush wins.

Richardson would have been way better than Kerry (but almost anyone would have except Sharpton or Kucinich)

-his speeches wouldn't have rambled on and on without going anywhere

-the campaign wouldn't have been about Vietnam (big factor, it's something people don't like hearing about)

-his association with Clinton would have helped.

-he would have humiliated Bush even more severely in the debates (though Kerry won all three)

-he didn't vote for the war and then vote against it or whatever

If Richardson was as poor a campaigner in 2004 as he has shown himself to be in 2008, he might have lost by a larger margin than Kerry did.
