Yeah, even if Trump beats DeSantis (which right this moment is likely, of course) it's still going to be a sh-tshow and it will hurt him among the base for the first time in years. This is the first time he's lost in the eyes of many of his devotees and the fellow travelers. They didn't count 2018 as a loss because they got some red state Senate gains. They didn't count 2020 as a loss because they blamed everyone else, but this they seem to recognize as a humiliation.

The best hope for DeSantis just might be that Trump announces his run early and takes out all his rage early on. Trump can spit venom at Biden forever and Republicans wouldn't get tired of it, but constantly attacking DeSantis, someone that most Republicans like and see as the de facto successor, might get old soon.
