Battle of the outsiders in 2000. Buchanan and Trump briefly ran against each other in the Reform Party's primaries that year. Would do you think this would have ended as the major party nominees? Trump became a Democrat in 2001, so assume he already did so a few years earlier and upset Al Gore in the primaries.

Trump probably wins. He was more moderate at the time while Buchanan was a borderline Nazi in his rhetoric. Trump is also more charismatic and could ride off Clinton's popularity perhaps more successfully than Gore, ironically. Also ironically, he'd get blown out of the water in the evangelical vote. He'd do great with the secular blue collar vote though.

I struggle to see Buchanan winning Florida under any circumstance due to his holocaust revisionism, it's even harder to imagine when Trump's running mate is Bob Graham.

That was a misclick when making the map.

Danforth wouldn't agree to be Buchanan's running mate. It should be someone like Bob Smith

Trump should win this. Buchanan was seen as too extreme, I assume, and Trump is high energy. Certainly would have been in 2000. Buchanan can't even play the "outsider card" here (though that's a wash).

✓ Businessman Donald Trump (D-NY)/Senator Bob Graham (D-FL): 337 EVs.; 51.6%
Commentator Patrick Buchanan (R-VA)/Senator Trent Lott (R-MS): 46.2%
