I agree. The person who gets to be PM for the next six weeks is hardly a historical moment that will be remembered for centuries.

If Sunak walks cheerily out of this meeting, and Johnson mysteriously stands down, what do you think Johnson’s price was?
  • Peerage?
  • Cabinet post?
  • Guaranteed a seat than Uxbridge at the next election?
  • Appointed Ambassador to Ukraine?
  • Plush cabinet post?
  • Privilege Committee iced?

Ambassador to Ukraine might be it. It would allow him to continue being in the public eye, and the country clearly likes him.

Lmao imagine going back to the 1940s and telling Winston Churchill that his party would end up being led by a man named Rishi Sunak

Churchill would perhaps have incorrectly assumed that India is still part of the Empire in 2022 though.

Jokes and political disagreements aside it would still be a momentous achievement for people of color in Britain.

Patel's endorsement was Priti bad news for Boris. Then, as if things weren't Badenoch, he lost Kemi too. And now, if Suella also drops him... well, even a Braverman than him ought to be worried.

(I'll show myself out)

Please don't boris with these terrible puns.  All of this will be over sunak or later.

There are still many Mordaunting challenges ahead, though.

I think thats enough puns now, this could Gove on forever

There’s never enough puns, Truss me.

There were Indian MPs even in the 19th century., including in the Conservative Party. So I doubt Churchill would be that surprised.

The Indian diaspora in particular has been very successful in Anglosphere politics, not just getting elected in large numbers but holding some pretty high levels of power. One could imagine a conference call between the British PM, VPOTUS, and the Canadian Minister of Defence, where the participants are Rishi Sunak, Kamala Harris, and Anita Anand, all of Indian origin. That's pretty remarkable.

The Telegraph are reporting that Steve Baker has endorsed Rishi

Several important things here:
  • Baker is about as ERG as you can get, and him endorsing Sunak means that they’re not going to save Johnson’s candidacy as a group.
  • Baker is a key ally of (and former campaign manager for) Suella Braverman, which suggests that she may not be endorsing Johnson, as previously expected.
  • This basically cements Sunak as the only candidate who can win the votes of both One-Nation Tories (centrist to centre-right) and those amongst the ERG (right wing fringe of the party).

Baker has always been a coward, he’s gravitating to Sunak because he thinks he’s going to win & is his best chance of holding his seat (we’re going to beat him anyway).

Baker was anti-Johnson earlier in the year, so it's not surprising he's not supporting him now.

Re him losing Wycombe, assuming this Parliament lasts long enough for the boundary changes to go through there will be a new constituency in Buckinghamshire, and it wouldn't surprise me if he moved to it.

The BBC being BoJo's totally uncritical client yesterday with the utterly evidence free "100 MPs" claim was yet another in the sizeable recent series of low points for their politics coverage.

Wikipedia tally at:

Sunak - 133

Johnson - 77

Mordaunt - 24

BBC tally still at:

Sunak - 129

Johnson - 55

Mordaunt - 23

I regard the more favorable Wikipedia numbers as kind of a best case scenario for Johnson since they also seem to include MPs who are on the fence or haven't officially committed themselves yet.

Redfield and Wilton comes out with some numbers that no doubt the Boris camp will gleefully point out to wavering MPs:
