So, at the last moment there are still many Conservative MP's who could not make up their mind about supporting Sunak, even with this race being over.

That does not bode well for him in my opinion.

There's no obligation to make one's nomination public.

Ah yes, that is true. We will have to wait what the final numbers are.

But still, It doesn't come across as very enthusiastic support for Sunak.

Sunak is addressing the 1922 at 14:30, so journalists in attendance for the announcement have now been asked to leave. Doesn't sound like it's going to be a premiership of radical openness...

Brian is coming from Sandringham to be at Buckingham Palace- he iirc hates the place and only uses it when he has to for work.

Charles is at Sandringham, so it was assumed he'd meet Truss and Sunak to do the hand-over when he's back at Buckingham Palace tomorrow. Possible that will get moved up now - but doesn't appear to be confirmation yet about the timetable. BBC still reckon it will be tomorrow, by the time logistics are sorted out.

Sunak is addressing the 1922 Committee at 14.30 (unclear whether the cameras will be invited in), so we might get a sense after that.

Edit: Charles is confirmed as travelling back to London this afternoon - so there's a chance it all happens tonight.

Are any cabinet positions already announced filled? I think at least Ben Wallace stays on as Def. Sec?

You have to be careful with 'firsts' lists, I find.

A large number of female MPs of South Asian descent were elected in 2010, mostly Labour: as well as Patel (Gujarati via Uganda) there was Rushanara Ali (Bengali), Shabana Mahmood (Mirpuri), Yasmin Qureshi (Punjabi) and Valerie Vaz (Goan via Yemen).

It's also worth noting that Ashok Kumar (Langbaurgh/Middlesbrough South & East Cleveland 1991-92, 1997-2010) was from a Hindu background even if he was not religious himself. A little awkward as he wouldn't like to have been thought of in communal terms, but society is what it is and so on.

There were actually a few MPs of Asian extraction in the late 19th/early 20th C, weren't there.

Charles said he wanted to be a modern king of a modern Great Britain. The first prime minister chosen under his reign being a Hindu of Indian descent is fitting. Would have been impossible for most of his mother’s reign. Much less his grandfather when India was a colony

I’m skeptical Rishi Sunak would have been elected leader of the Conservative party had the rank and file been given a vote. A large percentage of conservative voters would never vote for him because of racism. Are they a majority of conservatives? No but enough to tip a leadership election.

I think Boris Johnson dropped out because he probably would have won the leadership vote from the rank and file, but hated by elected MPs. How would he govern?

Has there ever been such a disconnect between voters and their MPs? Conservative voters clearly want Johnson, their MPs do not.

It’s the equivalent of Trump being denied the Republican nomination despite winning the primaries

A large percentage of conservative voters would never vote for him because of racism.

Whilst no doubt many conservative voters and members (the latter of which I think you meant) are racist people, there is more of a cross-cutting debate here. One of the most popular candidates among grassroots members allegedly was Kemi Badenoch, a black woman of Nigerian birth. While she might not have won those voters, she seemed to adopt policies and rhetoric that were in keeping with British patriotic hegemony and a belief their values would not be compromised - almost as if she was negating the supposed influence of her race in their subconscious. Contrast that with Diane Abbott who suffered perhaps more personal abuse than anyone because her values and character was even more of a target when combined with her race.

Rishi Sunak, in 'betraying' a Prime Minister who was beloved by that rank and file and supposedly stood for ideals of patriotism/nationalism, fed into the racism that would have already harmed his prospects. This allowed WEF conspiracy theories to feed their way in. It's similar to why Truss, who fervently backed Remain and clearly has few consistent views of her own, was seen as more acceptable to Brexiteers, because she aligned with the face of Brexit where Sunak did not. Or why criticism of Sunak's wife's tax affairs held little sway among Conservative members, because paying taxes isn't really a patriotic value in their eyes or if it was there were likely more important issues to them.

What I have said is still a simplification, of course. And there is a sizeable section of conservative members who do try to think about the facts of the matter, even if in a heuristic or misguided way - they are probably disgusting people but they are not necessarily BNP wannabes.

This is the best decision the Tory party could have made at this point, I expect Rishi will make the next election closer than anyone else.

It’s also wrong to think that the public or even Conservative voters have a universal views towards all non-white politicians; their gender and faith play into a lot.

This racism and bigotry is the reason why black men (and specifically British Caribbean) are a lot more under represented in both parties.

The question is only whether he lasts to 2024. I guess they can't put in another guy before holding an election now.

When I was a history student in the UK most of the classes I took had some degree of racial undertones (one class was literally just about Racism in the UK).

The main thing I learned is, while it feels natural to compare UK racism to US racism there is, in reality, very little to compare. The demographics are different, the history is wildly different, the underlying cultural attitude is different, the political system is incredibly different.

Does anyone think a candidate named Rishi Sunak (MP from rural Yorkshire) would win a congressional seat in rural Ohio?
