After Jimmy Carter serves two full terms, VP Mondale wins the Democratic nomination and faces off against Ford’s VP Nelson Rockefeller.

Mondale wins. A Rockefeller that lives past 1979 would be well past his political shelf date, he arguably was by the time he reached the Vice Presidency.
