... - 550BC: Ancient Egypt with interludes of other empires like Babylon, Persia (again), Hittites, maybe China and also Indus Valley civilisation, as well as Assyrians and Sumeria.
550BC-335BC : Achaemenid Empire
335BC-323BC: Macedonia
323BC-185BC: Maurya Empire
185BC-50BC: China
50BC-395: Roman Empire
395-530: Not clear to me, but I would say somewhere in China probably?
530-560: Eastern Roman Empire
560-650: Sassanid Empire
650-800: China
800-900: Abbasid Caliphate
900-1250: China?
1250-1350: Mongol Empire
1350-1450: China (Ming)
1450-1550: Ottoman Empire
1550-1620: Spanish Empire
1620-1815: French Empire
1815-1870: British Empire
1870-1914: Germany
1914 - now: United States of America

It's briefly done, so rough estimates, someone could flesh it out better.

One could argue that the USA briefly was number two in the 1950s and early 1960s and that the USSR was ahead.

Laki's list seems roughly on par with what I'd say. Though I would argue a bit on the German Empire being the most powerful worldwide from 1870-1914. Still seems like it's the limeys to me.

In any case, it’s rather difficult to argue that “most powerful” is not just “highest GDP” 99% of the time.

The Roman Empire.
Surely not in a quantitative sense by ruling the most heads in the most absolute way - but it will have been the Gordian knot of WorldHistory, which made us the other cult(ure)s of WestAsia & NorthAfrica available.
Without filling its PanTheon we would have - despite all archaeological findings - no relationship to them.
VOLTAIRE reported, that in all parts of France the farmers had still their stories about CAESAR (which were often authentic exactly because of being too deranged for being seeped down from books or teachers).
Byzantium, HolyRomanEmpire, Austria, Ottoman, Russia were all together its shadow projecting into the future.
And most of all the Catholic Church - "the most powerful appearance in world-history", as even the liberal protestant A.v.HARNACK had to admit.

Yeah I don't really buy Germany overtaking Britain at any point, but you could make a compelling case the post-Civil War US took the lead earlier than 1914.

The US certainly had the largest economy by the late 19th century, though it is complicated depending on how you count the India. WWI pushed the US far enough into the lead GDP wise to be larger than the combined strength, but if counted separately, the US was ahead as far back as 1879.

I seem to recall reading at some point that Britain didn't recover very well from the panic of 1873 either.

It depends heavily on how you define most powerful. In particular, do you mean militarily or economically? There have been advanced civiliizations that werent that great militarily (mostly because they had geographic advantages so that nobody wanted to attack them).

1519-1648: Habsburgs
1648-1763: France
1763-1918: UK
1918-present: US

It's really not possible to do it for the whole world prior to the 16th century. It could be interesting to do it by region but that's another thread.

1914 doesn't seem like a logical cut-off point for  British dominance, logically the point must be further into WW1 when the Empire's fiscal basis had been weakened and the US had built up its military. I've always thought 1917 makes the most sense, but you can make a case for 1918.

I'd say it really turned around in 1916, by then there were already towns that had lost entire generations to the war.

Fair, I should have gone with 1918. I have used the ends of wars as turning points with the 30- and 7-years wars, so it's more consistent anyway.

Jaichind, what I ask of you to to do is create around three more lists that starts however you like and ends till Hegemonic globalization of just two regions. The America’s however you define that and the island region of Oceania (one with and one possibly without Australia).

Given the lack of contact and the real unfair advantage those in Africa, Asia, and Europe—along with the nearby island polities—had during that time in globalizing among a larger stretch of land, it is only fair those other lists exist.
