Not to get too many people's hopes up, but Russia/USSR has more historical examples of military insubordination averting the use of nukes than any other nation. I'm not 100% convinced that if Putin were to give the order that it would be carried out. He's already demonstrated his knowledge of the real state of his Army is limited.

1983 was arguably a more dangerous year than 1962.

It feels like a few steps to nuclear war between Russia and the US, even if a nuke is dropped on Ukraine, but we'll only know in hindsight how close we were to nuclear war.

This goes to show us, that there are some high-level discussions within the White House (DOD, intelligence agencies, etc), about the "higher" risk of a nuclear confrontation.
All it needs is just a small spark, and the world will be changed (mainly destroyed) forever.

It would be pretty lame for humanity to make it all the way through the Cold War without going nuclear, only for it to all fall apart anyway a few decades after.

I fear it could be something that has a small probability, like half a percent per year. Which could explain why we've gotten this far OK, but would also mean this century is not looking so good.

Of course since it's never happened it's anybody's guess what the chances are.
