He only narrowly beats Bush. Perot does better in the south and the west with another technocrat from MA being the Democratic nominee.

With or without Perot?

Without may have been closer, though I don't think HW was going to be reelected in 1992 against most challengers. I still have Gore as VP here, who would probably run in 1996 then since Tsongas retires after being diagnosed with cancer. Gore would have became prez 2 days before the expiration of Tsongas' term, who died on Jan. 18, 1997.

✓ Senator Paul Tsongas (D-MA)/Senator Al Gore (D-TN): 304 EVs.; 50.9%
President George HW Bush (R-TX)/Vice President Dan Quayle (R-IN): 234 EVs.; 46.7%

Perot doesn't run, but Tsongas pushes many of his economic concerns, such as the deficit and a focus on revitalizing manufacturing.  The big difference here would be on trade: Tsongas supports NAFTA.  Bo Gritz is able to gain some attention as a third party candidate opposing globalism in trade and war, though not in such a way as to be considered a mainstream candidate.  George W Bush hits Tsongas on his liberal social views and his advocacy for gas tax increases, but Tsongas is an inspiring personality without major scandal and is able to contrast his vision with the failures of the status quo.

Fmr Sen. Paul Tsongas (MA) / Sen. Al Gore (TN)  Democrat    51.2%   342
Pres. George W Bush (TX) / VP Dan Quayle (IN)  Republican   46.3%   196
Lt. Col. Bo Gritz (NV) / Cyril Meritt (TX)               Populist         1.9%
