Generalizing here (but that's what this thread is for, right?), but I always regarded east coast liberalism as being more labor and race oriented, whereas its western counterpart is more libertarian-oriented.  One is more focused on rights and justice for marginalized groups, whereas the other is more interested in individual rights.
