It’s listed as “old age”.

But her husband lived to be 99, and her mother 101.

What exactly happened that she is dead at 96 and these two lived past that? Not to mention we tended to predict she’d live past that as well!

She was only very distantly genetically related to her husband, so the length of his life doesn't matter. Her father died at 56 and her sister at 71. Those are both more relevant data points.

She also had a lot of family troubles in recent years and at that age such things will have an effect, maybe she could have lived a few years longer without Andrew's Epstein connections and the Megxit drama.

The other cop out sometimes done is just listing "heart stopped" because there's no heart beat any more due to death.

Obviously Peter Thiel needed her to make whatever concoction he’s brewing.

But seriously, when you’re that old, each day is (for the lack of a better word) a blessing. I’d bet she probably had several underlying conditions (what 96 year old has no health issues?) that ultimately killed her. But, for everyone, death is in fact inevitable.

She definitely did, even if the palace was and still is coy about them. And her decline in the last 18 months or so (Philip's death being a major factor there, of course) was evident and undeniable.

I mean my grandmother died in her sleep when her heart just stopped, even if she seemed fine just a few days before. That happens to a lot of very old people.

Though both were massive smokers, and she wasn't.

It's reasonably obvious what it was and I'm a little baffled as to why the Palace are being coy about it, but, in the end, at that sort of age it basically is 'Old Age', isn't it?

Genuine chain-smokers, both. George smoked so much due to stress after he unexpectedly had the Throne foisted on him that his widow considered his brother to be the moral equivalent of a murderer and, well, fair enough.

Churchill arguably considered him to have died for his country - he wrote the words "For Valour" on the government's wreath, which is what is on the Victoria Cross.

I remarked at the time that couples together for anything like that long often died not too far apart.

Had a bit of a chuckle at the 'Occupation of Father' entry.

Maybe I was off base, but I got the vibe maybe 10 years ago that the Queen was probably not aging as well as her husband. He had more headline issues like his heart problem, but she had to stop traveling long-distance before he did despite being five years younger (and a woman) and she needed more mobility accommodations than he ever seemed to need.

She did hint that her health began a downward spiral after getting the you-know-what. Of course, at her age, even trivial illnesses can be fatal.

That is the serious answer. Once you're in your late 90s that sort of stuff is exceedingly hard to predict with literally any degree of certainty. It's chaos theory in motion. You can take two identical twins who have both had no major differences in their health histories and one can die five years before the other because that's just how health works when you're that old.

Here's a picture of 4 centenarian siblings. 2 of them lived to 109. I guess they all got lucky or something.

In the immediate term it could be as simple as having banged her hip. That's how my grandfather died and he was "only" eighty-five. When you get to that age it doesn't take much at all.

What is “Old Age” anyways? Do we just have a timer in our brain that stops our heart at a certain moment?

Most of the time it means the heart fails but with no specified proximate cause.
