2020 without COVID

This would be a more interesting timeline than Donnell losing reelection.
The good ending

Matthew Hugh Jameson, a former Governor of California who was renowned for his honesty and integrity in office, ran a reformist campaign, calling for an end to the spoils system, a secret ballot to curb electoral fraud, a full reduction of Greenbacks in circulation, slight cuts to tariffs, leaving issues of morality up to the states, and ending Reconstruction. He attacked Republicans for their corruption and use of the wounds the United States suffered during the Civil War to score political points; his running mate choice was meant to refute the "bloody shirt" attacks. Jameson ran a "front choice" campaign from his home in San Francisco, with Winfield Scott Hancock being the spearhead of his candidacy. As to the indians, he supported continuing the boarding school approach.

The election was extremely contentious, with Jameson's victory being decided by 150 votes in Pennsylvania; after a recount, Jameson was declared the winner, being the first Democratic president in 20 years.

Michael Rudd before politics
Michael Dennis Rudd was born in Port Washington, Wisconsin on October 18, 1918. His father was Thomas Ruud (1893-1965), a mailman of Dutch ancestry who was away fighting at World War I, and his mother was Ofelia Dennis (1896-1947), a nurse who worked at Port Washington's main hospital.

Michael's parents were moderately wealthy, which allowed him to study at a (relatively inexpensive) private school downtown. There, Rudd found it hard to make friends, due to his short height; but his artistic skills were praised by students and teachers alike.

By his own account, Michael Rudd decided to become a doctor at age 15, due to his mother's footsteps; he already treated sick guests at his house.

In 1935, Michael Rudd began to study medicine at the University of Wisconsin; he was licensed as a nurse two years later.

As a nurse, Rudd developed a reputation for fairness, treating all who needed care, even wounded criminals.

After the United States declared war on the Axis Powers, Michael Rudd was drafted to become a doctor for the US Army, given his medical experience from a hospital in Port Washington.

Rudd's first military experience was during Operation Torch, when he treated (according to his own words) 217 wounded United States soldiers who sought his care, during all the operation

Then, during the invasion of Sicily, Rudd treated 101 Allied troops who had suffered wounds in battle.

On December 5, 1943, Rudd flew back to the United States, where he received the Medal of Honor in a public ceremony with Franklin D. Roosevelt.

He remained a military nurse until the war ended, instead treating high ranking officers who had been wounded inside the United States.
After World War II, Michael Rudd used $800 in savings to open a restaurant called Mike's Cafe. Known for its simple, inexpensive Midwestern cuisine, including its speciality, cornbread, it soon became a thriving business.

Mike's Cafe provided Michael Rudd with his first political forum; he placed ads in the local newspapers featuring anthropomorphic corns condemning the Truman Administration's policies. He was a friend of US Senator Joseph McCarthy, even donating to his 1946 Senate campaign.
