An interesting scenario. Romney beats Obama in 2012 but Obama opts not to run for a second, non-consecutive term in 2016. Hillary beats Romney and Trump with Romney the front runner in 2020.

The 2020 election turns out to be a rematch between Hillary and Romney with Romney trying to become the first President since Grover Cleveland to win two non-consecutive terms.

Rematches tend not to go well for the loser, and if Romney already lost as an icnumbent, he's likely to lose again in 2020. Especially since Hillary would have handled Covid competently and would have gotten some extra points because of that.

✓ President Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY)/Vice President Timothy M. Kaine (D-VA): 324 EV. (51.36%)
Former President Willard M. Romney (R-UT)/Governor Michael R. Pence (R-IN): 214 EV. (46.91%)

Interesting. On the one hand, Romney really shouldn't be able to pull a Grover Cleveland, while on the other hand, COVID-19 would destroy pretty much any incumbent's chances at reelection especially an incumbent as polarizing as Hillary Clinton.

Former President Mitt Romney (R-MA)/Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) 49.888%
President Hillary Clinton (D-NY)/Vice President Tim Kaine (D-VA) 49.888%

P.S. I'd like to believe Trump is smart enough to not primary an incumbent President, OP. Or was he running third party, which makes less sense, since he was a registered Republican during the Obama Administration.
