A RESOLUTION
To not recognize the Iranian government under Supreme Leader Ali Khameni

Be it resolved by the Senate of the Republic of Atlasia assembled;

Section 1. Title

This legislation may be cited as the Resolution condemning Iranian leadership.

Section 3. Findings

Whereas,

(i) Supreme Leader Ali Khameni of Iran has suspended elections,
(ii) the Iranian government has killed and injured thousands of civilians,
(iii) tens of thousands of Iranian dissenters and protestors have been imprisoned,

It is the conviction of the government of the Republic of Atlasia that Supreme Leader Ali Khameni is not the legitimate government head of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and is not recognized with this authority thereto. The Senate fully condemns the violence, killing, and unlawful imprisonment by the Iranian government.

The recent behavior and activity of the Iranian Government is inexcusable. This resolution makes clear that the Government of Atlas stands unequivocally with the people with Iran and against the outrageous tyranny they face on a day to day basis. I hope we can past this with feverish haste.

I also invite the Secretary of State to speak on this resolution.

The actions of the current regime in Iran are egregious and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. As a republic that stands for democratic values, we should stand with the Iranian people and refuse to legitimize this lawless behavior. Just as in real life, Iran is heavily sanctioned, and in addition to the sanctions we've imposed we should not acknowledge Supreme Leader Khameni as the rightful head of state.

I'm going to echo what the Secretary said about the intention of the Atlasian government with this resolution. While this should be passed as soon as the Senate can do so, I also hope that as has been mentioned elsewhere we can give this some teeth and get some aid toward the people of Iran. Whether you folks want a separate authorization or amend something into the resolution is up to you. We've done both in the past for other countries.

Yes, as stated previously, we also want to provide direct humanitarian aid to the Iranian people, and whether we want to use this resolution (by way of changing it into an act including the resolution) or pass separate legislation is up to the Senate. However, I must stress that a good portion of the funding we allocate will need to be used to ensure that the aid money doesn't fall into the wrong hands. Every dollar and every cent must be tracked so that they don't run afoul of our sanctions.

And on that topic, the best way to do this would probably be to provide food and services directly rather than sums of cash.

Protests mount in Iran over the long-delayed Presidential Election.

Officially, the Presidential Election in Iran was supposed to be held in August of 2021. However, it never was, being called off at the time due to COVID concerns. However, skeptics, and now protestors, believe the real reason that the election was called off was that Supreme Leader Ali Khameni’s preferred candidate, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ebrahim Raisi, was trailing his closest competitor, the former Commander-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Moshen Rezaee by an almost 30 point margin.

After almost a year, the election still has not been held, and there has been no timetable for holding the election that has published, leading to mass protests across Iran, thousands dead, thousands more injured, and tens of thousands, including the entire adult populations of the cities of Nir and Danesfahan are currently in prison.

Through all this, Supreme Leader Khameni has been resolute that election will not be held, and sources close to the Supreme Leader say that President Hassan Rouhani, who has so far been persuaded to serve past the end of his second term is growing frustrated with the lack of a successor, and is unhappy with the crackdown ordered by Khameni over his objections.

Several countries, most notably, Saudi Arabia, Israel and the United Arab Emirates issued draconian sanctions against Iran in response. Of these countries, Israel’s is the most sweeping, barring even humanitarian aid from entering Iran. Prime Minister Benny Gantz, in a press conference stated that “while it pains me to deny Iranian civilians basic human necessities, we must do everything we can to bring down the Ayatollah ''. Rumors of an Israeli invasion are considered unfounded by most experts, who believe heavy Atlasian support would be needed.

The resolution itself, as it currently stands, doesn't even authorize foreign aid. The resolution simply says that we are cutting off diplomatic relations with the illegitimate Iranian government and refusing to recognize Khameni as head of state.

This is excellent. Only thing I'd quibble with is treating the government of Iran as "not the real government". There's no real government but the one of Khameini. People out in the streets does not constitute a government. Maybe a revolution will change that, but right now, that's the status quo we've got.

My position is simple. Avoid war, avoid other nations' affairs, and respect the sovereignty of other nations' affairs. I don't see a valid reason to condemn a nation with a resolution. It's virtue signaling and doesn't address anything.

At least you explained your reasoning, in what is supposed to be a place of debate. Was that so hard?

But we have no plans to go to war or engage militarily, and we have a direct non-monetary aid package on the way that doesn't violate these sanctions. Both of these things have the support of your party and president. We should not, nor are we compelled to, validate illegal dictatorships, especially as one of the biggest champions of fair and free elections in the world. And the reason we want to provide aid in the manner prescribed is so that it doesn't run afoul of sanctions placed on the government. I'll reiterate that we are taking a friendlier approach to the people affected than Israel has chosen, which also includes sanctions but also no aid.

The resolution simply states that we refuse to engage diplomatically with a government that has already stated there will be no elections. We are not condemning a country, we are condemning a government. That is an important distinction.
