It has been an absolute privilege to serve as your Senator for these past few months. In that time, I have fought to pass legislation to fight homelessness, to rebuild our schools, and to protect our most vulnerable citizens against discrimination. We have achieved these momentous successes by working together to help Atlasians from all walks of life. I am eternally grateful to my colleagues who have worked tirelessly over this past term to get the job done.

However, while it is important to recognize these important accomplishments, these successes have not come without pushback. LGBT anti-discrimination bills have faced opposition from conservatives in both the Senate and in the White House. Radical policymakers on the Right have attempted to dismantle critical protections for Atlasian workers and our environment. Legislators at the regional level have sought to undermine the ability of the Federal government to enforce laws that protect the most vulnerable in our society. These conservative lawmakers have it all wrong: we need to build on the work we’ve already done rather than tear down our progress and turn back the clock.

These difficulties make it clear that Atlasia needs a common sense, progressive alternative to the status quo. That is why I am proud to announce today that I am running for President of Atlasia! This decision comes after days of careful deliberation and self reflection. I recognize the great progress that our country has made over the past few months, but I believe Atlasia is capable of so much more.

As I stand here before you today, there are many new challenges that confront our nation. Inflation has risen sharply over the last year and has hurt working families across Atlasia. Senior citizens are especially hurt by these price increases, as many of them rely on a fixed income through the Social Security Administration. Global supply chains have been disrupted by the late COVID-19 pandemic and by the government in Beijing, both of which have harmed our nation’s ability to bring goods and services to market for our citizens.

Rising prices aren’t the only threat to Atlasia’s prosperity. Hospital wait times remain stubbornly high as Atlascare providers struggle to meet the increased demand on our healthcare system. Our workers struggle to compete against nations that rely on unfair and exploitative labor practices. Global temperatures continue to rise as the effects of climate change intensifies around the world. Leaders in Beijing and Moscow grow more defiant by the day, testing Atlasia’s commitment to our allies. At home, the scars of division and strife over the Kansas dispute have not fully healed.

It’s important to recognize that these challenges are not ‘either-or’ dilemmas. We can battle rising prices AND protect our workers from cheap and unfair competition abroad. We can secure our supply chains AND support our labor unions to promote higher wages for Atlasian labor. We can protect our most vulnerable citizens AND establish harmony between all regions of Atlasia. It is my belief that progressive change can affect each of these issues for the better, and that is exactly what I will do as your President.

This is the great crusade that I hope to embark upon with your support, and it would be the honor of a lifetime to serve as your President. We stand at a momentous crossroads in the history of our Republic. With your dedication and your determination, I know that the future of our country is very bright indeed. Preamble

Founded 10 years ago, the Labor Party is dedicated to supporting progressive and democratic change in Atlasia. We believe that a society which protects and invests in its people is the best way to build a more prosperous future for all Atlasians. This election, the Labor Party is putting forward a manifesto that calls for strong, progressive change in order to address the many issues facing our Republic.

Combating Rising Prices

Ever since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, companies and consumers across the country have been gripped by jarring price swings, inconsistent demand, and the collapse of major supply chains. We have witnessed both sudden deflation and sharp inflation in the past 24 months, and it has left Atlasians worried about the rising cost of living. While the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlasia works to combat inflation through monetary policy, there is so much more the Federal Government can do to fight the problem. To that end, the Labor Party supports:

–Implementing an oil and gas windfall tax, similar to ones proposed in Europe, to tackle rising energy prices.

–Invoking the Defense Productions Act, in specific circumstances, to secure vulnerable supply chains and to help companies build inventory. This will help prevent shortages of basic goods in scenarios where supply chains break down when subjected to pressure from increased demand.

–Create a new program that rushes 50,000 new union dockworkers to the nation’s ports, to help support unloading and transportation of imported goods

–Directly negotiate with railroad companies to support better pay for Atlasian workers and to prevent industrial action that could hamstring critical supply chains.

–Using Federal dollars to construct nuclear and renewable power plants, with local and regional support. This will help reduce the impact of higher oil and gas prices, and will support Atlasia’s efforts to combat climate change.

–Enacting a larger capital gains tax to discourage reckless spending that fuels higher inflation. This revenue will be used to finance programs under this category designed to control rising prices.

Reducing Atlascare Wait Times

The COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented chaos and havoc in Atlasia’s healthcare system. While our country has performed admirably in controlling the spread of the disease, there is much more we can do to support the people who care for our most vulnerable. To that end, the Labor Party supports:

–Reducing Atlascare wait times by hiring more doctors and specialists, expanding rural hospital networks, and by creating incentive payments for doctors that work in rural areas. This will be financed through a two percent increase in the Net Investment Income tax.

–Increasing pay for our nation’s nurses and critical care workers, by enacting wage and continuing education subsidies at the Federal level. This will be financed through a quarter percent increase in the Federal unemployment payroll tax.

–Encouraging nurses, caregiver, and social worker efforts to unionize, by negotiating directly with hospital networks and healthcare providers that participate in Atlascare.

Improving Childhood Education

Public education is the driving force behind the future success of our nation’s kids. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers and children alike have struggled to adapt to new learning challenges. The Labor Party recognizes that these difficulties have made it harder for our kids to access educational resources they need to succeed. In order to improve our nation’s schools, the Labor Party supports:

–Reducing classroom sizes by granting additional funds to the regions. This money is meant to support districts’ ability to hire more qualified teachers and support staff. A Labor government will finance this by raising the corporate tax rate by a quarter of a percentage point.

–Working with teacher interest groups to improve classroom conditions, while ensuring that 100% of our nation’s kids in public school learn in person and face-to-face.

–Enacting permanent support for the Office of School Facilities, and continuing to send grants to the regions to support better schools for our kids.

I just want to say, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. While we came up short today, you showed Atlasia that the Labor movement is indeed alive and well. Your support and dedication have been indispensable over these past eight weeks.

I have contacted President Cao to officially offer my concession. I know that President Cao shares our dedication to making Atlasia a better place for everyone. While we don’t see eye to eye on every issue, we both believe that Atlasian democracy is sacrosanct and that the people of this nation can overcome any challenge that faces them. I look forward to working with the President over these next few months.

The torch of the Labor movement must be passed to a new generation of Atlasians. It is with pride and faith in the future of our movement that I pass the baton on to these young leaders. Their dedication and courage will pave the way to many victories in the future.
