Liz Truss is basically what happens when you combine the introverted awkwardness of Theresa May, the complete incompetence of Boris Johnson, the hatred of poor people of David Cameron into one Margaret Thatcher wannabe and then remove all residual charisma with an industrial strength garden hose.

In simpler terms, she’s got Ted Heath’s awkward personality, with Heath’s terrible luck, and Heath’s economic incompetency. We can only hope that, like Heath, she’ll call an early election in desperation, and accidentally lock herself out of power.

I agree with many have posted. The Tories have run out of ideas and are a complete hindrance for the country, plus, they are doing a lot of damage to their image and credibility. 12/13 years in power is a long time and adding deep internal divisions to it, only masked by a weak Labour opposition, the cracks are now clear and the building is starting to crumble. A snap election defeat could actually be the only thing that can save the Tories future prospects, right now.

Honest question: how possible do we think it is that Truss call's a GE to avoid yet another leadership challenge?

Boris didn't do it, perhaps because at the end of the day he knew the public façade that he had more electoral support than internal support was a lie, or perhaps because he knew who was holding the knifes and what their likely electoral fate would be. I don't think at this point anyone would deny that Boris will be attempting to rewrite the past year, return to leadership of the party after a loss, and comeback like an exiled savior.

But Truss...well she doesn't seem to fully grasp her position. If there is already talk about internal letters being sent, then her position is precarious. Its not to hard to imagine her believing that intensification of partisan activism, like has been done here, will in the end win her the day - it did in the leadership vote after all. Or she could slap a three-line whip on these type of issues, or maybe even this, in an attempt to force everyone to heel but it backfires spectacularly.

I don't see an election before 2024.  Truss wants to put her small state ideas into action and hopes by some miracle economy takes off.  Despite her rhetoric, I really have a tough time believing she is dumb enough to believe to actually believe trickle down economics works.  I think she just ideologically believes in small state and since figures party likely to lose anyways is taking approach go big or go home and hoping due to other factors economy picks up and she can take credit for it.

Real question is due enough red wall MPs rebel.  They are in tough spot.

In light of the pound tumbling again this morning, I was searching up Kwasi Kwarteng's wiki page to see how someone this blindingly incompetent got into office and I noticed The Economist is thinking the same way:

How Not To Run A Country (The Economist)

Say what you will about Liz Truss but one cannot claim that she's a BS artist or a scammer. She once made a pledge that she'd be "opening up new pork markets". By devaluing the pound until it's worthless, pork will be exported abroad. Also, more British people will be tasting "local" apples and Yorkshire pudding: they won't be able to afford anything imported!

Truly a visionary leader, who is making sure that Britain returns to the rustic way of life by generating a massive balance of payments crisis that forces everyone to only eat foods grown locally.

The greatest threat to the United Kingdom is its own government.

Perhaps now would be a good time for Labour to dig up this video from a few years back:

I mean Christ, we need to reshoot it for the American palate and play it on loop over here, 24/7.

God Truss is having an awful media round on regional radio this morning.

There has been a reason she has been kept off the radio. It’s like Nicola Murray.

The one thing the Tories have going for them is that Nigel Farage has no interest in electoral politics anymore. If he did, and he decided to fight the next election as a hard right populist party they’d be facing oblivion - not merely defeat.

The BBC have stitched together the Truss interviews into a single podcast, for those who are interested:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0d3flmh

Apologies to non-UK posters, it'll be region-locked to here, like most online BBC content.

Edit - here’s a 10 minute supercut of the highlights/lowlights: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_q0rlT-5oxE

Resigning from the government under Boris Johnson was very bad for your career, because it was viewed by the Tory grassroots as disloyalty. I do wonder how much longer where that stops being the case, and resigning from the government because "Have you seen her? How can I defend that?" actually becomes something that enhances your future prospects.

Truss and the people around her are maybe out of touch enough to believe her getting interviewed by these "mere regional journos" would be an easy ride. Despite the fact that these "provincials" handed Johnson most of his uncomfortable moments during the 2019 GE campaign.

Interviews are tougher on local radios because the journos tend to be less concerned with their own egos than do their national counterparts.

I think she's got to be voted out of office before 2024/25, there's no way the membership or MPs can put up with this disaster.
