They’ve got a skeleton to build on with the mayoral system, but a more federal approach, with parliaments in Yorkshire, Cornwall etc would be far better, and in line with the second chamber suggested in the report.

It’s been a long running demand and idea within most of the party but I doubt anyway expects it to happen- the lords ofc has the benefit now of being an anti Tory body so there’s a lot less anger.

My own deeply weird proposal would be to make it 50% elected by regional PR and 50% appointed, with half of that being cross benchers.

The main thing they could do is cut the numbers- currently only the Chinese congress has more members.

I'm increasingly missing Boris Johnson, this mini-budget just shows how much worse Truss' policies are. We're counting on Labour to put this government out of its misery in 2024.

The 'leaked report' it's effectively what Brown has been wheeled out to propose in the Scottish press like a reanimated corpse for the past ten years.

'Reforming the House of Lords' is a hundred year old unfulfilled promise.

As I said on another forum, it's bizarro-socialism that cares not a jot about inflation or borrowing or the defecit but shovels free money into the pockets of it's wealthy client base.

Labour will have to cut spending and raise taxes or start seizing wealth. Which frankly it's long overdue.

Liz Truss has apparently been taking economics classes at the Nicolas Maduro school of magical thinking. Very good.

Utterly depressing. I don’t know who this is even supposed to appeal to, electorally speaking. The lion’s share of the benefits are going to the top few percent, not even the broad upper middle classes in a way that might try to bring back the ‘Blue Wall’.

Oh they really Believe in all this nonsense, that's the thing. It was ominously clear during the Endless Leadership Election. This isn't policy as electoral strategy, this is pure ideological delusion.

Love to crash the country into the wall for the sake of getting a sugar rush from implementing the IEA wish list. Famously the 'let the cadre in charge write whichever policies they want, with no care as to whether anyone likely to vote for you will benefit or whether it even make sense all together' approach worked out great at the ballot box for Labour in 2019, too.

Yes, this is basically Tory 2019 style Corbynism.

The key difference, unfortunately, is that unlike his version of Labour they can still count on sizeable totally uncritical support from client media - and the rest may still be too timid in challenging them.

Has to be said that Reeves was good today though, shooting fish in a barrel territory or not.

I've written long posts about fracking in the past and how little sense it makes so I won't bother here, but can I just say how delighted I am that JRM's latched on to an initiative that will undoubtedly lose the Tories votes, and hopefully do damage to his carefully crafted image as an old-fashioned gent.

I noticed that quite a number of Tory MPs expressing concern come from marginal seats in the North & Midlands - Blackpool South, Bolsover, Blackpool North & Cleveleys (maybe a stretch that last one). Hopefully fracking helps Labour to reclaim some of that red wall.

Massive tax cuts combined with unlimited energy subsidies, 400 billion+ in new debt, pound crashing, bond market melting down like it's 1994 all over again

Congratulations to the Tories!

There's been a suggestion today that the fracking announcement yesterday was a bait and switch to disguise the fact that they removed the effective ban on new onshore wind today.

Which is possible, but very dumb - whilst there are a lot of Tories who hates onshore wind, it's much easier to tell them to shut up because we've got an energy crisis on than it is to also piss off the Tories who hate fracking, especially in their constituencies.

Very possible that a fracking attempt there could turn it red - its really hard to understate just *how* unpopular it is in actually affected areas (and polling which is often skewed towards "do you approve of it to help the energy crisis" type questions shouldn't fool anybody there)

Boris Johnson returns as leader within a year as the voice of rationality and moderation. Calling it now.

My expectation is that this won't work.

And that the public understanding that it doesn't work will facilitate a new understanding that the only way to obtain wealth and encourage growth is to redistribute it. But people have to want it.

I'm increasingly missing Boris Johnson, this mini-budget just shows how much worse Truss' policies are. We're counting on Labour to put this government out of its misery in 2024.

The Tory march into the sea of "single-issue pensioners' FYIGM party" continues unabated!

The ONS shows that those aged 60 to 64 have nine times as much wealth as those age 30-34 and while wealth decreases above that, as social care costs rise, the median wealth of someone over 90, is higher than every cohort under the age of 54.

It's a demographic trap we're in. There's nothing left to squeeze out of the working age population.

He was still well beaten at the polls, so would settle for that again.

It still confuses me how a second house works in a meaningful way in a parliamentary system.

If they have any sort of veto power at all it renders the government of the day useless.

With that said I think Browns plans to devolve THAT much are not a good idea. However I could get behind turning the upper house into a smaller house of regions that is elected every certain number of years - and it takes 70% to veto anything by the commons.

Also, Truss is a disaster. Truly terrible.

I wonder if Non-right wing Scotland voters will get the message they need to vote Labour to end the Truss led Tories. Otherwise it would take a massive popular vote number to get any sort of decent majority.
