The only one I can think of is 2020 cause while:

- 1980 is arguably the Iran Hostage Crises , The Reagan Landslide and the GOP taking over the Senate did become the News Story of the year

- 2008 is arguably the Financial Crises, the Obama Factor did keep it from becoming the main news story. If It was Hillary vs McCain, 2008 would be another one where this is ture

The Covid pandemic must have been bigger news than even the 2020 election, it imposed huge changes on people's daily lives. 1968 and 1972 also might have been overshadowed by the Vietnam War. In 1956, the Suez Crisis and the invasion of Hungary might have been bigger news than the election result, they certainly should be at least.

Oh yah 2020 is definitely one but I am not sure about 1968/72. The Election of 1968 was insane in every way possible in ways that only 2016 arguably matches and in 1972 Vietnam was already winding down by then.

You could argue any year where the incumbent's reelection wasn't in doubt....

It was, but I feel like the big events were the Tet Offensive and the convention riots, with Nixon's election being treated as an inevitable after-thought. Also I forgot about Nixon going to China, which was a huge deal in hindsight but might not have kept being a current news story for long once it happened.

Also 1972, 1984, 1996. Simply because the outcome was not really in doubt those years. For 1964, I’d say the Civil Rights Act and Gulf of Tonkin were bigger news.

1964 is a good one, and the civil rights battle was so drawn out in Congress that it was a huge news story, and of course it was a huge social change that people didn't just move on from.

If you don't count sports/entertainment in this , what would be the biggest news story in 1996. Like honestly I can't really even think of one lol so due to that I would say its just the election just for that reason.

As for 1984 keep in mind the Democratic Primary was extremely close so it could be that in 1984 and I count that as part of the election

1996. No one cared and turnout was low. Didn't Bill Clinton spend election night on Air Force 1 because the results were a forgone conclusion?
