Vallas hanging with his base.

See, this is why as stupid as Johnson is, he's still better than Vallas. Yuck.

Marching in a St Patrick’s Day parade is what makes Vallas worse than Johnson? Huh

St. Patrick's Day has been appropriated in the US into a holiday that celebrates terrorism.

Irrespective of your personal feelings about the holiday, do you think it is politically smart for Vallas to do this?

If this pollster is accurate, then it's clear where the momentum is. I'd like to see more statistical points of reference... But with the election in just a few weeks we probably won't get a ton more.

Perhaps, but Johnson had a lot of momentum in the final stage of the first round and maybe that’s being captured. M3 had no change from their runoff hypothetical to their first real runoff poll.

I am very strongly anti-IRA, but the idea that everyone who celebrates St. Patrick's Day supports the IRA is ignorant at best and Hibernophobic, at worst. In fact, Irish politicians, especially those from Fine Gael, strongly opposed the IRA and worked for peace on numerous occasions. It is really only a very small minority of Irish people who think car bombings were fine. I know recent developments in Irish politics are concerning, but the overwhelming majority of SF voters do not support car bombings, and the overwhelming majority of Irish Americans do not.

Vallas hanging with his base.

Once one of the main Democratic bases in America, only Democrats like Vallas, Biden, Schumer and Newsom get these people.

Once Harris, etc. ascends in the party, they're gone.

I'm surprised they still live in Chicago and haven't moved elsewhere in Cook or even suburbia in DuPage.

Mount Greenwood has a lot of police officers and firefighters who are required to reside in the city. As are all municipal employees. For NYC they must reside in the NY metro, but not the city itself.

The South Side Irish Parade runs through Beverly and Morgan Park, not MTG.  Still many city workers though.

Why is Johnson supporting the head tax a big deal? $4 per month per employee seems negligible. No business would leave the city over that amount since it would be much more costly to move. On the flip side that seems like a negligible amount of revenue to raise.

Is it just that it’s a symbol of being anti-business?

Being Irish, particularly catholic, is one of the few things on reds list of idiosyncrasies which he hates worse than the term latinx. It's somewhere above suburbs, but below people who don't like emo

Just curious, does anyone have an idea how Vallas went from an abysmal 9th Place 5% finish 4 years ago to finishing top of the field with a solid third of the vote this time around?

The most likely explanation is simply that last time he was a dime-a-dozen White candidate for the people who take that into consideration /w their vote and this time he's the only one. Fitting, in a way, since Vallas has absolutely nothing else to offer Chicago besides that and privatizing their schools.

I'm sure someone else has a wonkier reason, and I wouldn't mind hearing it, but considering a Daley was literally on the ballot in 2019...

There isn't much of one, you were right the first time: Vallas just really lucked out this time around by getting to run alone in the neoliberal white reactionary lane that makes up ~1/3rd of the municipal electorate & consequently gave him 32.9% in this year's 1st round after giving Daley/Joyce/Chico/Vallas/McCarthy/Fioretti a collective 37% last time around. Likewise, had all of them except Daley not ran in 2019, then we probably would've seen him easily carry the 1st round plurality ~15 pts. ahead of Lightfoot & get to go to a runoff with her.

Actually when I started going to my church the then lead pastor was Irish, although he was obviously not Catholic. He talked about going to a Catholic high school and had gone to Catholic schools his whole life until college and frankly they sounded awful. But anyway that guy was awesome. And he didn't seem to care about St. Patrick's Day.

Regardless I liked how he was an obvious counter-example to the claims by many here that people of Irish descent raised Catholic NEVER EVER leave Catholicism.

Good, municipal workers like cops and firefighters should live in the city or the metro they patrol.....NY has been pushing for this residency requirements for decades, but the unions don't want it.....why would these right wing cops want to patrol city residents they don't like, they should stay and apply in their suburb, if they want to....

Yeah this is pretty much it. Daley would have made the runoff (and probably won) if Joyce hadn’t spoiled his chances in the first round last time. Jerry Joyce is lesser known but popular with white south siders.

This electorate not only consolidated, but also grew because of the attention that crime has gotten over the last couple of years. A lot of liberal northsiders voted for Lightfoot in 2019 and Vallas this time.

These are all great examples of why ranked voting is objectively superior to two round voting. It also saves money because only one election needs to be held.

This guy is so strange.

Raoul’s endorsement is important. First big statewide official to get behind Johnson. Not sure if there will be any more, though.
