Wow, this wasn't even that close. Genuinely impressed by the people of Chicago here. It really goes to show how stupid NYC's politics are by comparison that a clownish right-wing hack like Adams could make it through.

Adams really isn't a right wing hack, he has some more moderate views of law and justice and some other issues but it's not like in neoliberal doctraine like Vallas was. Also there was a reason why Adams did not get the endorsement of police unions, which normally right-wing hacks do get.

The reason why Adams won, and Johnson did is they both got strong votes from a multi-racial working class coalition. Adams won black voters strongly, and Latino voters as well. Meanwhile, Johnson won black voters strongly as well, and barely lost latino voters.

I realize that they're not 100% analogous, but Adams has spent his first years in office fearmongering about crime in a way indistinguishable from the worst Republican caricatures (and probably helped legitimize Republicans at the local level, leading them to win a bunch of seats they had no business winning) and proposing unworkable and morally repugnant "solutions". Nobody denies that crime is a real issue for large cities, but if overpolicing and overincarceration were the solutions to it, you'd expect America to already be one of the least violent societies in the developed world. And Yet.

True, ovepolicing does not work. But being lenient on crime and letting criminals walk like NY's bail reform doesn't work either. NJ's bail reform that got passed with Republican Christie should be the model. Not IL or NY's bail reforms. Which is why states like MD and VA will never do it. If they do, they'll model NJ's one.

What happened in Chicago on Saturday is why Chicago cops voted for Vallas and why a lot of them are gonna leave for DuPage or Will County departments...

It doesn't look good for the city...

Spiting the city because your candidate didn't win isn't going to get a lot a people to have much respect for the department.

True, but you have to understand that a lot of police officers/unions see this as a us vs. them thing, and they want to work under mayors who have their backs and allows them to arrest people, not fearing doing so because it will look racist. They don't like politicians like Lindsay, Beame, Dinkins, Lightfoot, de Blasio and Brandon Johnson because they are in their way.

Lesson from this is Defund the Police doesn't work anymore, we need gun control laws and we aren't taking guns away from citizens just from criminals and we know D's are secure about the police as RS, Vallas kept saying Johnson wants to Defind the police like RS attack Ds

WHEN you pass tax cuts for rich Defunding police is to throw off Suspicion from cutting Entitlement and Ukraine is getting more funds some goes to refugees

Not really encouraging that Johnson's response is full of empathy for the teenagers but there is not a word of empathy for the people who were attacked at random on the street. Combined with his stand-offish attitude towards that journalist who asked him a basic and easy question about his transition team, getting Lightfoot 2.0 vibes here.

Politicians like Johnson get angry when suburbanites vote against guys like that, not realizing that their words and statements causes that tension.

It's crazy how Chicago seems to have fallen for the same mistake twice. I'm sure when crime is even worse in 2027, the third time will be a charm for electing an anti-police candidate...

https://wgntv.com/news/chicago-news/poll-chicagoans-support-polices-to-address-the-root-causes-of-crime/

Quote
A survey conducted by GQR and Vera Action on the eve of the election found that Chicagoans overwhelming support policies to address the root causes of crime. Six in 10 voters chose prevention compared to four in 10 who back a tough on crime strategy.

LAW AND ORDER IN DISARRAY
This aged well.

Anyway, all of those people who thought it was open season should be in Juvie, not being defended by Brandon Johnson.

Chicago chose some hope over somehow who’s destroyed multiple school systems along the way and everyone who worked at those places said he’ll destroy you too, stay away. Easy choice.

Really, now we're doing the "using random news stories to attack the Democrat who hasn't even taken office yet as 'soft on crime' and making apocalyptic predictions about a Democratic city becoming lawless" thing?

Absolutely pathetic. Some of you people need to change your avatar colors now.

The Mayor-Elect is out here equating these violent and destructive acts as silly decisions.

But some of you have “hope.” Yay.

There is a difference between doing soft drugs/drinking or even minor vandalism and smashing people's cars and beating people up.  The things the mob did aren't "silly decisions".

No, they are moderate Democrats who are worried about Mayor Johnson's proposals. Sposato, Napolitano, etc. will block some of his proposals.

Chance the Rapper will run in 2027 and probably win...so....

I don't see another white moderate mayor like a Daley/Emanuel again unless Chicago craps the joint.

Johnson is now officially mayor, I wish him the best, he will need it. Let's give him a chance, and see what he does.

So far Brandon has governed like a Warrenite, which is not very good but expected. He’s caved under pressure on his promises way too early and is fairly weak as an executive, leaving most politicking to the city council.

Alright, I was off in many ways. I did think that Willie would be the kingmaker like last election but it seems like in the runoff any democratic candidate would win against a lazy republican running his campaign entirely by trolling nextdoor. It was pretty sweet seeing Republicans and police cry the way they did, and for the utter victory downballot. For next race the city council will definitely be the main target as Brandon will win the mayoral race with definite certainty, the Vallas campaign has annihilated the old Democratic party machine vestiges along with the conservadem faction. Pritzker, the finance industry, and the customer base in the unions with their retirement packages dealing with the middle all united to rule together.

I have realized that I’ve been too bearish on the nominal left candidates in any given race, so I’m also using the lessons of chicago to improve my predictions.

Johnson has behaved entirely like an absent leader as much of his powers are delegated to the council with no way of retrieving them. He was always going to behave like a low-energy democrat, which is so much worse than being Harold Washington 2.0 who made his old hood middle class and gave many people cushiony public jobs.
