I’ve seen Republicans say on Twitter than Democrats were mean to Romney. What are they referring to?

My best guess is that Republicans respond like this when they are challenged on their positions on the issues and they know that the majority of the general public is not on their side for said issues.

I can see what they mean. For example, the "binders full of women" comment. It was really just an awkward phrasing, but Democrats mocked him mercilessly for it. I remember people saying things like "This idiot thinks women come in binders", even though they clearly knew what he meant.

For the record, I voted for Obama. And i don't think being "mean" to your opponent in an election is necessarily bad. A lot of the Obama campaign's negative messaging on Romney boiled down to "this rich idiot doesn't understand your problems" (true, IMO). Some might call that "mean", but it works.
