In terms of Biden, I suspect that the kids in cages issue seemed far less pressing than the Covid pandemic and Trump's response to it.

In terms of Trump, it seems that he got so caught up in the culture wars that he essentially forgot how he really won against Hillary (i.e. by attacking her on the issue of free trade - if he had focused on Biden's support of free trade, he might have won the same way he did against Hillary).
