Why didnít Biden run against ďkids in cagesĒ? Why didnít Trump run against ďMexico sending their rapistsĒ? Why didnít Trump attack Biden for voting for NAFTA and the WTO or for writing gun laws?

In terms of Biden, I suspect that the kids in cages issue seemed far less pressing than the Covid pandemic and Trump's response to it.

In terms of Trump, it seems that he got so caught up in the culture wars that he essentially forgot how he really won against Hillary (i.e. by attacking her on the issue of free trade - if he had focused on Biden's support of free trade, he might have won the same way he did against Hillary).

Biden did talk about immigration but he did so skill fully. I remember seeing commercials about "kids in cages". BUT Biden knew illegal immigration is very unpopular. Democrats do not win when defending illegal immigration (even with second or third generation Americans).

In the 2019 debate the moderators asked about decriminlzing border crossings, I rolled my eyes. You would have thought Trump asked that questions as a "gotcha" moment

Same with guns. Guns haven't been a winning issue for Democrats (historically) so Biden avoided it.

I was asking why Trump didnít talk about guns, not why Biden didnít talk about guns.

Talking about guns only works for Republicans when Democrats talk about guns

Democrat: Hell yeah we want to take your guns
Republican: We support 2nd amendment

Winner: Republican

Republican: Democrats want to take your guns
Democrats: No we don't. Thats just NRA talking points.

Winner: Democrats

See? Neither party benefits by bringing up the issue. Hence it not being an issue in 2020.

People didn't have time for a culture war when Covid was crashing the economy, ruining their daily lives and putting their loved ones at risk.

Trumps campaign was a stupidly run disaster that forgot most of what got him elected in 2020.

Yes, he should have hammered Biden on NAFTA/WTO.

It was painfully obvious that the Trump team expected Bernie to be the nominee, and they never really pivoted away from cringey canned lines about SOCIALISM. Outside of South Florida it didn't really win him any more votes, and as you said there were far better things to hit Biden on.

They would've thrown this line out if Bloomberg won. SOCIALISM is just the default against any Democrat.

But really, COVID was the main issue at play and Trump botched it! Those other things just didn't really matter much.

Yeah, COVID sucked all of the air out of the room on every other issue.

If COVID never happened, they would be major issues in the election
