The first manned mission will be two years from now if everything goes well on this mission:

People around the country, are said to be forming "launch parties" to watch the spectacular take-off.
Looking forward to it.

It's still 2 years until the second flight, which would be the first time for humans to leave near Earth orbit since 1972.

When that happened:

Joe Biden was a Senator elect whose wife just died
The internet was something like half a dozen computers
Cellphones were extremely rare and large
The personal computer hadn't been invented yet.

Wait, NASA is actually going back to the moon? Like actually taking steps to do so? That’s incredible!

In the next few days, they’ll launch a unmanned rocket that’ll orbit the moon.

In 2024 they will launch a crew that will orbit the moon.

In 2025 or 2026, a moon landing where the astronauts will spend 40 days building a permanent base.

Trump actually established the Artemis Program in 2017. But most of the ground work was laid in the Orion Program that was started in 2005 but cancelled by Obama in 2010.

Why did Obama cancel it?

The SLS took over from the CEV in 2011. This project is another example of a major project being delayed due to poor performance.

Unfortunate it happened, but better this be done safely and properly. Rushing things like this is not a healthy practice.

Friday might not work either due to inclement weather, a potential tropical cyclone would be headed that way on that day.

Because the planned launch vehicle wasn't survivable. It would kill the crew on an abort, and put them through the equivalent of pounding them with a jackhammer even if it worked, threatening their long-term health and making it impossible for them to operate the spacecraft. Fixes were plausible, but they would drastically increase the cost while lowering the payload, and delay any launch until the late 2020s.

The (arguably flawed) delayed and expensive  SLS sitting on the pad now cost less, and was ready earlier than the Ares launchers Obama cancelled for Constellation would have been.

Interesting. Thank you for the info. I’m a space and political buff but not a tech expert so I appreciate it

I realize this is far from the main issue, but the Ares I was also one of the single ugliest rockets ever designed.

Seriously, look at this thing.

Just want to remind everyone (and bump thread), that the launch window for tomorrow is still the same, as seen above.
Thus ... window opens at 2:17 p.m. ET and closes at 4:17 p.m. ET on Saturday.

I think they are saying the launch has been scrubbed for today.
Some technical issue once again.

Scrubbed because of a liquid hydrogen leak they couldn't fix.

Such a shame, I feel bad for everyone who travelled or camped out to see the launch dates.

Now they are aiming for September 19:

NASA won't try to launch the Artemis 1 moon mission again for at least a few weeks

Given September and October are peak months for the hurricane season -and Florida is traditionally Ground Zero for these tropical cyclones when they make landfall in the US- I highly doubt this launch is going to go forward until after.

With the Bermuda high being so far to the east this year, I don’t really think we have to worry that much about hurricanes. Maybe a non-developing tropical storm will form in the GoM but that’s about it.
What we will probably have to worry about, unless the weather pattern changes with the season and we get double lucky, is a really strong Nor’easter season. With how slow the Atlantic hurricane season has been, I am totally prepared for the fact that there will be several days that the Cape has 30 something degree weather with 30 mph winds in January, if not November. I’m expecting a good few inches of snow here in Virginia.

Just a reminder that this is the meager speck of the budget we assign to an agency that I believe in the next few decades could (and should) be one of the most important government initiatives, full stop.
