It's extremely noticeable that Republican primaries without a Trump endorsement virtually always return a candidate I like, while Trump-endorsed candidates are much more variable in quality. Moreover, Trump seems to consider factors (like celebrity power or existing relationship) which I consider irrelevant, so that I can't even always complain -- I was fine with him backing Eric Schmitt and Mehmet Oz -- but they're often for candidates I don't like all that much at all, like Mark Mullin or J.D. Vance, and occasionally they're for candidates against whom I'd prefer a Generic D, like Joe Kent or Dan Cox. The whole experience is very frustrating because I think the current primary electorate is -- sans the huge reaction to Trump endorsements -- actually in many ways the best one we've had in a while.

This leads to an odd effect where I feel closer to the GOP base on many ordinary issues and opinions of individuals than I did in, say, 2014, yet the actual slate of candidates coming up is probably somewhat worse from my perspective.
