Meh. It's gutter humor and a little undignified but not really the end of the world given the current state of politics in this country.

I think what this says more about is how extremely online so much of the GOP is - you have to be on Twitter daily to even understand what the gist of this joke is or have any context for why it could possibly make sense. I think that's more damning of Ted Cruz and people who laugh at this than the literal content of the joke.

Also, can you imagine if a Democrat said this about a Republican senator? Republicans would be unanimously demanding his resignation, and some Democrats would be joining in...

Honestly... who cares? It's so weird to me when people make up hypotheticals just for the sake of getting angry about them. No Democrat is likely to say this about a Republican, so why bother entertaining the idea?

edit: not that it's exactly the same but at some point during the Trump years Norma Torres stood on the floor of the house and attributed Republican nay votes on some bill to being "sex starved" and other than political reporters nobody really cared. Cruz's joke is worse (and dumber) than this example but not really by that much.

That's also kind of the point, no?

If you want to split hairs, no not really, they're two separate points. If he said "no Democrat would make a joke about Liz Cheney having a penis" I wouldn't have disagreed. Harry's post read more like "wah look at how my side is subject to different standards" which, like, yes dude we're all aware because we lived through the Trump administration. I don't think one really needs to conjure up self-deflating hypotheticals to explain why this kind of joke is dumb.

Ok, so your point as I understand it is essentially "yes we already know Republicans are loathsome, crude, hypocritical, and subject to their own set of standards that they never hold others to, but it's boring to keep pointing it out."

I guess on some level, that is a cornerstone on my opinion of this yes. I just think it's kind of tedious how much of what counts as "talking elections" has become "can you believe how dumb and unprincipled these people are?" Which, yes, this is something that any half-awake person in the US in the last decade is aware of. I knew that in 2012 when I was knocking on doors for Barack Obama. There isn't anything really interesting here to uncover unless you want to beat your chest about how much more virtuous you are than them.

I posted a variation of this a couple days ago

Not really a take but it's annoying to me how much time people devote to trying to point out Republican inconsistencies as if they were "gotchas". E.g., "Kevin McCarthy said this recently, but two months ago he said this totally opposite thing!"

The GOP hasn't stood for any sort of principle other than the accumulation of power. If you ever took anything they said as anywhere close to reflective of their beliefs or true intentions, here have you been for the last decade-plus?

So yeah that is kind of my point. At this point it's like quoting lines from your favorite movie over and over again - it makes you feel good but otherwise it's hot air and everybody knows what's coming next. Especially if you're going to do what Harry was doing and try to, for the thousandth time, use it to mug up some indignation that paints you as the victim. It's boring.

I would disagree.  If we don't keep pointing it out and reminding ourselves of this fact, we will all soon become accustomed to it, and eventually tolerant of it.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "accustomed to" but that seems like a silly fear. Especially because, not only does the GOP not care what you are/are not "tolerant" of inasmuch as their behavior, but if anything they want you to be intolerant of them because it gives them satisfaction. If they care at all about what you and I think, it's only so they can continue pushing our buttons. They're reactionary in the worst possible way. I don't see what is to be gained by giving them what they want. You becoming "tolerant" of it would never make them stop.

I don't know. I just think this is all predictable and surface-level stuff - like watching people square dance. I wish there was more interesting stuff to talk about. I know I will never be able to stop you, Harry, Ferguson, etc. from posting outrage porn ("can you believe how stupid and unprincipled these people are???") no matter what I say. I've already started tuning this stuff out - at some point I'll give you guys what you want and stop coming to read this garbage altogether. I'm just not there yet.
