In 1900, President McKinley selected New York Governor Theodore Roosevelt Jr as his running mate, but United States Secretary of the Navy John Davis Long of Massachusetts, a Coolidge type of Republican whom, interestingly enough, feuded with fellow Massachusetts Conservative Henry Cabot Lodge Sr. So, let's assume in this alternate world that Long is selected as McKinley's Running Mate instead of Roosevelt, who dies in a train accident of some kind in 1902. Then, McKinley is assassinated and Long decides against running for a Term in his own right due to the recent death of his daughter. Instead, the Party elite gets behind Elihu Root for the Nomination, but in a major surprise, Progressive Firebrand Wisconsin Governor Robert Marion La Follette Sr wins the Nomination. The party forces on Follette Charles Fairbanks of Indiana for Vice President. Meanwhile, the Democrats go with their longshot choice, New York Governor William Randolph Hearst with William A. Harris of Kansas being his running mate.

Who does Long appoint to the Court, who McKinley appoint to replace Long, and what does the 1904 Election look like (Electoral College and NPV?)

Hearst was a liar and Republicans were dominant at the time, but his wealth and support from William Jennings Bryan would make a him a better candidate than the nobody Alton Parker was.

Interesting, what would you say be the NPV?
